The Worst Thing To Ever Happen To Music
1. White people playing the blues. They can't. Also, it distracted white people from their own, legitimate musical roots, namely, the European folk tradition.
2. Drums. Not every song needs a drum beat. The modern iteration of the standard drum kit is the principle reason for the downfall of modern music. Drums are poison to poetry.
3. MGMT.

Caress of Steel, 2112, Hemispheres, Farewell to Kings, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures were all vastly superior to the synth laden dreck Rush began to push in the mid 80s. At least you didn't try to claim Power Windows was one of their best efforts.

Have to disagree about the Beatles. Would you rather they went on like The Stones just so you could get another "Some Girls" like comeback out of a bunch of 60s dinosaurs? Nah, they served the legend well by killing the beast and moving on.

I've got mad love for all three, but I think Paul's Boutique is just as good, if not better, than all three. Black Planet isn't even the best PE album of all time. As far as I'm concerned, the "holy trinity" of hip-hop is Paul's, Compton and Nation of Millions. You can nitpick about the order, but those three are far and away the best, IMO. If you wanted to expand the list to five, I'd throw in Enter the Wu-Tang and Things Fall Apart.BSmack wrote:No love for "Fear of a Black Planet," "Paid In Full" or "Straight Outta Compton?"MiketheangrydrunkenCUfan wrote: 1. As far as Paid in Full goes, I love Rakim as an MC (arguably the GOAT), but Eric B's beats never rose to the level of folks like Dre, the Dust Brothers or the Bomb Squad. I think "Microphone Fiend" from Follow the Leader might be the single best rap song of all time though...

Also, just for the record, fuck Tupac. He's gotta be the most overrated dead guy this side of Brad Nowell. He was the third-best MC in Digital Underground (fourth-best if you count Shock and Humpty as separate MCs) and motherfuckers act like he's the greatest rapper that ever picked up a mic. I know that my love for Fear over Nation puts me in the minority, but I just think Fear is the more cohesive album. But honestly, comparing the two is like comparing Godfather I & II. No matter how you look at it you're talking about an elite effort. Paul's Boutique is a great collection of beats. It may just be the best sampling job ever done. But the rhymes, although impressive for the sheer volume of spit and seemingly disparate cultural references, don't grab me that way Chuck, Flav and Griff do on any of the seminal PE tracks.MiketheangrydrunkenCUfan wrote:I've got mad love for all three, but I think Paul's Boutique is just as good, if not better, than all three. Oh well, I'm sure we could have a good time blasting any of the above classics. I think I will when I get home later.

You're not in the minority. FOABP is by far the more mature work.BSmack wrote:

Beats, rhymes, politics...
By comparison, Nation seems dated and of it's time, whereas FOABP still feels relevant.

Re: The Worst Thing To Ever Happen To Music
Yeah, they're both great albums, but for this old metalhead, the "Angel of Death" sample alone is enough to put Nation over the top for me (to say nothing of "Bring the Noise" or "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos.")BSmack wrote:I know that my love for Fear over Nation puts me in the minority, but I just think Fear is the more cohesive album. The beats on Paul's Boutique are incredible by today's standards, let alone those of the late '80s. I love Girl Talk as a guilty pleasure, but whenever someone starts talking about what a visionary artist Gregg Gillis is, I feel compelled to remind them that it's nothing the Beasties & Dust Brothers didn't do 20+ years ago, except the Beasties actually wrote original lyrics for those beats. I realize that the content of those lyrics might not be as important as what Chuck, Flav, Ren, Cube or Eazy had to say, but in terms of virtuosity for virtuosity's sake, they're pretty hard to top. Most rap groups follow a pretty basic formula: MC #1's verse, MC #2's verse, MC #3's verse. But the way the Beastie Boys intertwined their voices and rhymes within the context of a verse -- or sometimes even a single line -- is what puts them on another level for me. Well, that and the fact that as a white teenager growing up in Nebraska, I could relate more to drive-by eggings than drive-by shootings.Paul's Boutique is a great collection of beats. It may just be the best sampling job ever done. But the rhymes, although impressive for the sheer volume of spit and seemingly disparate cultural references, don't grab me that way Chuck, Flav and Griff do on any of the seminal PE tracks.

Re: The Worst Thing To Ever Happen To Music
I wouldn't be so sure of that. Richard Wright was a drug casualty who preferred getting high on his yacht in the Mediterranean to producing music with Pink Floyd, Mason was sick of the grind and Gilmour hasn't written his own lyrics since 1987. That means that the vast majority of the creative work still would have fallen on the shoulders of Waters anyway. And Waters was already beginning the transformation from visionary to bitter old fart as early as The Wall sessions. Nope, Waters was smart to divorce himself from the whole process. See my earlier comments about The Beatles.Go Coogs' wrote:Worst thing to happen to music? Roger Waters and David Gilmore's egos getting in the way after The Wall

Re: The Worst Thing To Ever Happen To Music
Wright was falling apart, but The Wall and time constraints for a Christmas release pushed him over the edge. Not only that, but Waters was being a total dickhead during the entire process of cutting that album. I think Wright was going through a tough time in his personal life and had been able to work on The Wall on his own time, then maybe things would be different.BSmack wrote:I wouldn't be so sure of that. I still think the creativity was there with the four main (I use that term lightly) pieces. Waters was an asshole and I think he hated Gilmore being the level headed mainstay in the group. They fought like women over The Wall, but got the job done in the end. And it turned out to be a huge success.
It's unfortunate the way it turned out, because no matter how much they don't want to admit it, Gilmour and Waters were a lethal combination in the studio. Waters was great with lyrics and Gilmour with the music. I think the two of them in a studio again would get the creative juices flowing again. I don't know...I could be wrong.

Re: The Worst Thing To Ever Happen To Music
Waters always had a fragile self concept, and by 1977 and the Animals Tour he had pretty much snapped. It was in 1977 the Pink Floyd as a musical collective died. After that point it was Waters using the rest of the group as his sidemen to produce the shit he wanted or he was going to blow the whole fucking thing up. There was no "patching things up" at that point because there was no band left.

They may have peaked with Animals, but everything that came after was still better than 90% of the other music that came out during that timeframe.

Re: The Worst Thing To Ever Happen To Music
Of course I love Floyd. I just realize the last true Floyd album wherein the band attempted anything even remotely resembling a collaboration was Animals. After that the band was no more and was replaced at first by Waters and Floyd members appearing as his sidemen and later by Gilmour and the remainder of "the band" as his sidemen. I love The Wall and The Final Cut, hate Momentary Lapse of Reason (an aptly titled album) and can barely stand Division Bell. But that is immaterial. The fact remains that Pink Floyd was nothing more than an artifice to sell albums after 1977, not a name representing any form of group collaboration.War Wagon wrote:Reading that, one would be led to believe that you despise Pink Floyd. :?BSmack wrote:Waters always had a fragile self concept, and by 1977 and the Animals Tour he had pretty much snapped.
