And while AAU membership is prestigious, and I obviously have a bias in this regard, I wouldn't quite call it the be-all and end-all of discussion as to what constitutes a great academic university. There are plenty of outstanding academic institutions that are not AAU members. Dartmouth, Georgetown, and my alma mater come to mind rather quickly in that regard.
I heard that same description as well, although it was several months ago and in a drastically different context. At the time, it looked like the Texas and Oklahoma schools were headed to the Pac-12, the Big XII was about to implode with the Big East and/or ACC picking up the scraps.
