Or embarrassing, depending on one's perspective.

But since you brought it up (sort of), I found some of the choices curious here.

At ND, I would've given the honor to Joe Kuharich, the only coach to post a sub-.500 record at ND (17-23 from 1959 to 1962). Hal Mumme was a strange choice for Kentucky, to say the least, at least by won-lost record. I would've given Minnesota to Joe Salem (19-35-1 from 1979 to 1983). That's a slightly better record than Wacker, but I think Salem should get some extra credit for his 1983 team, arguably the worst in history of any BCS-level conference. They gave up 84 points to Nebraska, 518 for the season (average of 47 points/game), and a delta point differential of -337 (average -31 points/game). I would've gone with Ted Tollner over Paul Hackett at USC -- Hackett had a worse record, but it was Tollner who started USC's rather lengthy trek through the wilderness, and Hackett at least beat ND. Tollner lost three times to Gerry Faust.

Just a few off the top of my head.

Holmoe beat John Blake. maybe twice. forgot that Freddy Akers coached at Purdue. Akers had a tough spot. follow DKR and coach against Switzer's OU teams. bet Freddy looked pretty good in the rearview during the McWilliams/Mackovic years in Austin, though. glad to see Watson Brown get some "love" as Vandy's worst. didn't like him as OU's OC under Gibbs either. personally, it was like the guy was following me around in the 90's....couldn't shake him.

If they really think Fairbanks is worse than Hawkins (and Cuda has made similar claims), I guess I'm just glad I'm not old enough to remember his tenure...

For fucks sake, stop linking to BR stories. I read more spelling errors and typos in that story to make suckaholic look like a master of the English language.

as a semi-impartial CU observer and longtime Big 8 guy.....it's hard to say with Chuck and Hawkins. there's no real reason why Chuck should have sucked so much. he won at OU, as a part of the late Jim McKenzie staff he got Switzer and Barry's eventual staff to Norman from Broyles at Arkansas, had a nice pedigree from MSU (famous Sparty coach named Dusty or something, early this AM and forget) and worked under Frank Kush and Bill Yeoman. won at OU, won with a crap Patriots franchise into the NFL playoffs....and somehow he sucked ass at Colorado. i've heard boozing as a rumor around here in Boulder. True or not, Chuck seemed to "fall on his sword" to spite the Pats owner after some contract disputes and took CU down with him. In the 70's, CU was legit under Eddie Crowder and the much under-appreciated Bill Mallory (won a share of the Big 8 title in 76, played in the Orange Bowl)....and CU bottomed out under Chuck. somehow. Famously, he lost to Drake twice at Folsom Field. Drake dropped football as a sport the next year.

Hawkins was a fraud from day 1. telling you, the weirdest TV ever was Dan's Season 1 "All Access" show. weird combo of inflated ego, Van Morrison and Mandela quotes, and "football". Gary Barnett's players were staring at their feet or the ceiling during the "motivational" pregame or halftime speeches. Dan thought he was Hamlet or something. rambling soliloquies about crucibles and fighting dragons.

edit: Duffy Daugherty is the Sparty coach.

The Coach: John Coatta

Years Coached: 1967-1969

Record: 3-26-1

As rumor has it, the Wisconsin athletic department was faced with a decision during the offseason in 1967. They needed a new coach. The choice came down between Coatta, an alum of the university who set several Big Ten passing records as a quarterback and was currently on staff or a Miami-Ohio coach named Bo Schembechler. They chose the former.

Coatta failed to win a game in his first two seasons, going 0-19-1. They showed marked improvement in year three, finishing 3-7 (all conference wins), but it wasn't enough for the Badgers to retain him.

Coatta would go on to coach Mankato State where he compiled a 35-24-2 record in six seasons.

He would serve as offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the late 1970s.
In the late 60’s, Wisky also interviewed Bobby Knight for the basketball job. They offered him the position while he was still in Madison for the interview. He requested that nothing be announced until he could return to West Point, where he was coaching at the time, to inform his superiors. Before he had that opportunity, someone leaked the news to the media. Within 48 hours, Knight called back and declined the offer.

You mean like using a word that denotes comparison and not comparing it to anything?

At Oregon State, Joe Avezzano went 6-47-2, including 2 14-game losing streaks, separated only by the greatest comeback (at the time) in NCAA history (sup Fresno State). Went 0-11 his first year.

But then again, maybe it was the program itself, since he then went on to pile up 3 NFL Special Teams Coach of the Year Awards, and 3 Super Bowl rings.

Or maybe he's just one of those really good assistant coaches who suck when handed a head coaching gig. Paul Chryst, are you paying attention?

he probably had too many Oregon kids on those Oregon teams. The first rule in success at Oregon is to have as few of the urine filled gene pooled players from Oregon on the team as possible.
