College football championship game...

Post by Goober McTuber »

...this Friday. The Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. UW-Whitewater vs Mount Union for the 7th year in a row. They’ve each won three of those games. Whitewater has offense and defense. Levell Coppage has rushed for over 2,000 yards with 27 TDs (over 7,700 yards for his career). QB Matt Blanchard is 211/306 for 2,755 yards, 23 TDs, 3 INTs.

Defense gives up 90 yards/game rushing, and a 2.8 yards per carry average. Total defense of 254 yards/game. Opponents have completed just 50% of their passes for 10 TDs, 23 INTs. Whitewater wins 31-17.

The dominant D3 programs have just kept it going.

And they keep edging out my Linfield Wildcats (who now how 56 consecutive winning seasons, a streak no other CFB team at any level even comes close to matching).

Paul McQuistan, the new OT for the Seachickens is a D3 guy... every once in a while, a D3 guy makes the big league. Brett Elliot of Linfield, who guided his team to the last non- Mt. Union/Whitewater D3 Championship was a clipboard jockey for the Chargers for a while.

Since they started holding the D3 Championship in 1973, Mt. Union has won 10 of them. Pretty impressive -- although I'm guessing... just guessing that there's some rich alums that are finding ways to recruit the "non-scholarship" players.

Oh. I thought you were referring to the real College Football Championship Game, aka the MIAA Invitational, played in Florence, Alabama every year.

Pittsburg State knocked off hated rival Northwest Missouri State twice this season for the honor of taking home the Division II hardware after they make short work of upstart Wayne this Saturday. NWMSU had made five straight trips to the championship Game before falling to Minnesota-Duluth in the semis last year. Pitt State has made the trip to Florence four times since ’91.

Should be a helluva ballgame Saturday.

The best thing about Div III is that the players are truly student-athletes who play for the love of the game and have no illusions of playing professionally....although a very few actually do make it to the NFL and MLB. I enjoy going to Div III football games because it's refreshing to see kids playing for all of the right reasons, plus...it's good football without 80,000 drunks stumbling around the tailgate scene. I can drive into the parking lot at my alma mater 2-3 hours before kickoff, set up my grill, and be the only vehicle in the lot for an hour before other tailgaters begin to arrive. It's actually relaxing when compared to the tailgating at Iowa or Iowa State.

I've seen Whitewater and Mt. Union in past years....don't know anything about their teams this year....but I swear that Whitewater gets the Badger rejects for their offensive line...you know, the guys who only tip the scales at 310 instead of 330, and they have had some great teams. I always watch the championship games for Div III and Div II and I'll be tuning in this weekend too.

Pierre Garcon played at Mt. Union

London Fletcher played at John Carroll (cleveland school)...

Mt. Union has the NCAA record for consecutive victories regardless of divison if my memory serves me correctly...

Vern DenHerder played at Central College in Pella, IA, and was part of the no-name defense for the Dolphins.
Wilbur Young played at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, IA, and played for the Chiefs....and maybe the Chargers or Rams.
More recently, Fred Jackson played at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

There are a sprinkling of Div III players in the NFL.

DIII National Championship....Wayne State vs. Pittsburgh St. 11am kickoff.

Go Tartars!!! (they changed their name to Warriors, but they'll always be Tartars to me)

i like Tartars. Gorillas is pretty nifty, too. it cracks me up to listen to Dan Hawkins do color....after the freakshow train-wreck that was his CU tenure.

It cracked me up to listen to Terry Bowden do color....after the freakshow train-wreck that was his AU tenure.

It took Auburn two years to get back to winning seasons after his "recruiting."

Try having Matt Millen shoved in your face constantly on cfb broadcasts an as an NFL "expert" on studio shows.

Lower ranked team should have been disqualified. Some pissant no-defense school should have been allowed to go...even if they lost to a .500 team that they were favored to beat by 30.
Never work, Sammie. Stupid NCAA makes you earn it on the field. Hell, everybody knows that championship teams should be determined by popular vote…

Speaking of Meatgrinders, the MIAA sent four teams to the playoffs this year: Pitt State, Washburn, Northwest Missouri, and Missouri Western. Nice prep for a five round playoff. Props to Wayne State - the 6th - and last team in their region - for making it to the title game.
