blocks not one but two Chiefs FG attempts today, the 2nd as time was running out in regulation and sends the game to OT. Duhs go on to win, ending KC playoff hopes in a most excruciating, gut wrenching manner.

I hates that guy. :brad:

And don't you just love that NFL OT? Kickoff...long play-action pass completion...cue Sebastian Janikowski.

Thanks for coming, folks. Drive home safely.

Wags, what was with all the empty seats at Arrowhead, home of one of the best fanbases in the NFL. It's Raiders-Chiefs, and a Chiefs win keeps them alive for the AFC West crown. So why was the middle yellow section half empty, as was the upper deck.

upper deck looked pretty full, the mezzanine section is insanely overpriced for the average flyover schmuck. Thing is, when they did the $375 million renovation, they put most of the cash into that area, or so I've heard. I've never once stepped foot in it.

Doesn't KC usually sell out every week? How do they not sell out what was essentially a playoff game against the Raiders?

That huge upper deck was showing an awful lot of red seats.

Oakland just rolled into Narrowhead and once again (5th straight time there) took what is rightfully theirs.

Only the 2nd Oakland game I've missed this season.

Ugly game - bad football, but an exciting (or heartbreaking, depending on your affiliation) finish.
15 Raider penalties. lol

KC, done.
SD, done.

Oakland still with division or wildcard hopes.
Dungver controls it's destiny - just beat the Griefs at home.

Interesting.

as for the NFL OT rules...

Chiefs had the chance to stop them, not allow a big play. They failed and the better team won today.

I agree with Van that the NFL overtime procedure blows.

Doubt that I agree with him on a correction, however. haha

Far too much value comes with simply winning a coin flip.

bullshit.

If you can't play defense in OT you don't deserve to win, coin flips be damned.

Nonsense. Once they won the coinflip, the Raiders weren't forced to play defense. Only the Chiefs were, and with the Raider penchant for choking defensively that was a huge coinflip. Even the NFL realizes how horrible their OT is, which is why they changed it for the playoffs.

Scary thought.

Yeah, if KC wins the coin flip, I think they probably win the game.

Yet another way that NCAA rules make for a much better game.

Rules I really think the NFL needs to copy the NCAA on:

OT... obviously. Huge excitement, but the networks might not be jiggy with the varying times they can last.

Stopping the clock to move the chains... "Stick management" provides an extra layer of clock management in the NCAA.

And for goodness' sake, NFL -- it's a league of grown men... play like it. Put the hash marks where they're supposed to be. Why even bother having them if they're 3 feet apart and add nothing to game strategy? REAL hash marks bring field management and clock management into the equation -- NFL hashes make a joke of it.

The AFC West is not going to send a wild card team to the playoffs.

ok, I'll bite.

What the hell do the hash marks have to do with anything other than you getting a buzz on?

Probably not.

Oakland can get in as a wildcard, but it would take a few sepcific game outcomes.
Actually, all of the outcomes, individually, are somewhat reasonable.
Just not that reasonable that they'll all string together.

Are you fucking retarded, or just new to football?

Having REAL hash marks makes a difference in many aspects.

On the nuts-and-bolts physical side, if you move the ball 20 feet off to the side (or about 11 feet farther out than the NFL), that whole pythagorian thingy kicks in, and makes the kick longer, even though it's from the same tard marker. But there's more -- go stand where the 5 yard line meets the sideline, and look at the goalposts. That's a pretty narrow slit (sup not trev). Now, start walking up the field -- gets wider and wider as you go, eh? It's a geometry thing.

So now, you have to manage the field, the clock, and your timeouts if you're attempting a long FG.

I hate that the NFL does so little to incorporate more strategic stuff into the game -- but they market it to the armchair masses who typically know a fraction about the game from what they think they do, and the NFK definitely works the KISS strategy. The NCAA plays much more to the diehards. Quite a bit more strategy comes into play in the NCAA.

Play-to-play, having wider hashes creates much more strong-side/weak-side matchups, and tends to not allow the TE(s) to run willy-nilly, and the coach/OC has to pick their spots to run plays for the TE.

Whole bunch of subtle differences, really.

Don't even want to think about all the times USC used to line up on the left hashmark and still ran a sweep to the left side, predictably running out of playing field before the defense, all bunched up in limited space, easily stopped the runner.

"WHY GO LEFT?! GO RIGHT!" I used to scream at the TV.

Never did understand that. If it was meant to fool the other team, well, more often than not it simply made their job easier.

Right. To fool the defense. And at least in USC's case, with rare exceptions it never seemed to work. God, I hated it.

Dins is right.

The narrowing of the hash marks was a very significant move as far as the ruination of the NFL game goes.
Sucked a whole lot of the flavor out of it with that genius move.
