It was a hell of a run

I think this was Joe's finest moment - celebrating the Fiesta Bowl win and a 12-0 season:

Thanks, Joe.

as someone far removed from the situation.... it's a damn shame this man had his reputation and legacy sullied by what went down there. I always thought he was a class act, that opinion hasn't changed.

Yeah, he sullied his own reputation. He was an active participant in his own undoing.

Not only that but he'd already sullied his rep by sticking around a good ten years past his sell-by date, in the process dragging PSU football down to utter mediocrity. Even when he'd become little more than a feeble caricature of a coach, his ego simply wouldn't allow him to step aside.

There's somewhere between retiring at the top of your game at age thirty-two and jealously hanging on at age eighty-four to a position of status that's long since passed you by. When it became apparent that JoePa really couldn't perform the full duties of a head coach, he should've stepped aside.

That was a good ten years ago.

Joe was HC for 46 years from 1966 through 2011. I could type out a 75 point bullet list of criticisms of the guy...and honestly, they would outweigh the positives, probably...but it makes sense to me to mark the end of an incredible career.

Dude hung around way too long. He hasn't been a real HC for many years. Helluva run? Why because h wouldn't leave? Helluva run because nobody had h balls to force him out? Helluva run's don't end in disgrace amid the nastiest scandals in the history of their profession. Helluva run's don't cost untold number of children their innocence.

Fuck JoPa.

Had he voluntarily stepped aside after going to the police with the Sandusky news back in '98 or whenever that crap was first brought to his attention, that would've been the right time to conclude what up until then had been an incredible run. All he's done since then is tarnish his legacy, both on and off the field.

i have a good friend from Colorado grad school who is a Penn St. undergrad. frankly, it was going to time to move on....that it had to happen like this, is sad. and fucked up. but, most of us from big time program fandom have had to let go at some point. Switzer, Royal, Bowden, Bear, Tedford (lol), etc. Paterno was eternal in a neg way for PSU fan.

bad it had to be like this, but Joe was bringing things down for a while imo.

time to find out whether PSU is a real program or just one coach's charismatic authority.

Every record should be "ripped" from the freak a.k.a. Jo Pa.

When you stand by and watch that shit go down, and do nothing ... you're jail punk !!!

Whatever time the "pedophile" gets... Jo Pa should do twice the time... since he could have stopped about 90% of the abuse that continued if he acted like a MAN .

I hope that sick fuck ( Jo Pa ) rots in hell and is NEVER mentioned with College Football again.

If it turns out he just kept his mouth shut to save his job to get the record over Eddie Robinson, then I agree with M2. I'd snatch every win he had since 1999 away from him.

but my .02:

When it comes down to Bowden and Paterno and who was the greatest head coach, even given Bobbie's rather inglorious send off, between him and Paterno.....

Bobby won.

I think we all know that he had more power on that campus than the AD and President.

Going to the the AD wasn't enough. Joe Pa had the power to stop that shit then and it didn't happen. I can't feel sorry for Joe Pa for his demise. I feel sorry for what happened to those kids and what continued to happen to those kids long after it should have stopped.

Ludicrous. Had they done so, JoePa simply says, "Go ahead and try it. Let's see how that works out for you once I take you to court."

'Spray, there are these things called "whistle-blower" protection laws.

Beyond that, like M Club said, what should've been more important to JoePa, his job or those kids? Not that his job ever would've been in jeopardy for doing the right thing, but even if it had, so what? The guy was already in his seventies by that time. It's not as if he still needed the work.

Plain and simple, the guy was instrumental in a cover-up. He buried his head in the sand, knowing full well that a pedo was running loose on his campus. The reason he did so? Path of least resistance. He just didn't want to become involved.

most seem to want to convict him without a trial and maybe that's deserved, I dunno. I'd like to at least give him some benefit of the doubt, at least hear his side of the story. He's earned that much. I don't think he's spoken publically in his own defense yet. Maybe he can't speak of it until the legal process with Sandusky plays out. Maybe he won't speak of it ever, and if so, that silence will be deafening.

Nobody here, in their rush to judgement, knows exactly what Joe did or did not know, what he did or did not do, based on that knowledge. At this point, all anybody knows is hearsay.

Let the man speak or take the knowledge, and shame, to his grave.

Wags, all anyone here is doing is giving their opinion on what's been stated in the press, which includes statements given by the assistant coach, as well as those given by JoePa. No one has come out to deny the veracity of those statements, least of all JoePa.

Until he flat-out declares, "No, the guy never came to me with any stories about Sandusky," which you know he won't do—since that would be a flat-out lie and a direct contradiction of his earlier statements—the guy is rendered guilty by his own words and nonactions.

Probably PSUFAN's place to respond to this but I'll bite . . .

Helluva run because he basically built the PSU program from the ground up. Helluva run because he won two national championships (and had a bunch of other close calls) with a program that had never won any before he arrived. Helluva run because he made his program into a player in a geographic area which basically had no players at that time.

Yes, he stuck around too long, and yes, a bunch of kids had their lives ruined on his watch. That doesn't mean that he did nothing good during his time at Penn State, though.

How many children have you fucked?
Bro, if you read that and got anything resembling support for JoPed or the actions of Sandusky, you're beyond challenged. You make Honey Badger look like Einstein. My advice is to re-read the post before thinking of fecal, homo, pedo-laced retorts. Think more, post less.
