How many black 'dual-purpose' college QBs—or running backs of any color—could've forced defenses into filling the box with nine people on every down? Tons, actually, but they were never given the chance...because long term, it won't work in the NFL.

Tebow is being given that chance, solely because he's Tim Tebow. No one is expecting this thing to remain as it is, though. He won't be able to keep his starting job while continuing to burp up three shit games for every decent game, and defenses will soon work out that happy medium between guarding against the zone-read rush and leaving their CBs stranded in perpetual man-coverage.

As Steve Young mentioned today on KNBR, NFL defenses are too fast for this to last. The Detroit, Buffalo and Kansas City games will remain the norm, and no one is going to overreact and blunder their coverage again the way Pittsburgh did. In the meantime, Tebow's great game last week has bought him time heading into next season to work on becoming a real NFL QB that can be counted on to deliver passes from the pocket even when he isn't given the luxury of facing nine-man fronts and zero pass rush. That's what he's going to have to do in order to become a week-in, week-out dependable QB in the NFL, and anyone who doesn't realize that the jury is still very much out on the guy is seriously clueless.

So? The threat of it and the fact of having that extra blocker available on every down means that Tebow almost never faces traditional fronts, pass rushes or secondary schemes. Even you could complete passes against guard-solely-against-the-run nine-man fronts. Zero pass rush combined with man-coverage and little safety help means all he has to do is wait for the receiver to pull free from his lone defender.

It comes down to defenses overloading the box to stop the run; not just Tebow's running, either, but Denver's overall rushing attack. That fact is allowing Tebow to avoid having to pass under duress, which he'll have to master before he'll ever be a dependable NFL QB.

See, you're sucking your dick over last week's game but where were you the previous three weeks? When Tebow looked about as bad as any NFL QB ever has, no one heard a peep from you. Had you actually said anything it would've been, "So? He had a rough patch. It's still early in his career, and he has a ways to go. And he got them to a Conference Championship Game in '04.
