favorite versions?
listening to some old vinyl, I realized I had various versions of an old blues song written by the Rev. Gary Davis-Cocaine Blues
I recall that the original was mostly speaking, but haven't heard it for a while.....Keith Richards did a kick ass version as did Townes Van Zant...Nick Drakes was probably the best guitar work, but my favorite is probably Jackson Browne's version off Running On Empty

great stuff if you like old blues progressions

"Sultans of Swing" on "Alchemy"...
Mark Knopfler's guitar work on that particular version is genius

Johny Cash did the definitive "Cocaine Blues."

Alchemy is an outstanding live album. Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet never get old.Felix wrote:well fuck it

Re: favorite versions?
the song johnny cash did is a different song....but as far as that song is concerned, yeah johnny did it better than anyoneBSmack wrote:Johny Cash did the definitive "Cocaine Blues."
(george throughgood's version made me hate that song for a while)
I'm not normally a big fan of live albums, but Alchemy is a definite exception to that....others exempted: The Who Live at Leeds, Neil Young, Live Rust, Johnny Cash Live at Folsom, Eric Clapton, Unplugged, Peter Frampton, Frampton Comes Alive, Bob Seger, Live Bullet...Little Feat, Waiting For Columbus....I'm sure there are others, but those are the only ones I can remember that I own....Screw_Michigan wrote: Alchemy is an outstanding live album.
somebody will probably hate me for not owning Allman Brothers, Live at Filmore East...sorry

And Cash's version of Josh Haden's Spiritual is a song I can listen to all day. His passion singing it gives me goosebumps.
I was fortunate enough to have been introduced early in my life to Johnny as my father was a huge country fan....didn't much care for my dads choices by and large-Ernest Tubb, Bill Monroe, etc. (but have grown to appreciate most of them for what they are) but really liked Cash the first time I can remember hearing him (I'm pretty sure it was Folsom Prison) and my appreciation for Cash's brilliance has grown over the years....working part time in radio (primarly country stations) I was afforded the opportunity to listen to his entire albums, rather than just what was played on air....
the American Recordings box set is the best compilation I've ever heard.....there really isn't a close second

It's patronising and overly calculated.
It's like R.E.M. doing the Banana Splits theme song or something.
I cringe when I hear it.
