enematool,
Recognize those helmets? Just like the one you have to wear around the house.
Don't be jealous because Scott gets to play outside and you don't.

I's a big deal to Flyovers to go and do whitewater?
Makes me count my blessings that I live in a metro area with 2 whitewater rivers flowing into it.
Last time I went through big rapids was... last week. Inflatables are nuts this time of year, in 39-41 degree water, and are generally worthless to fish out of, but I've certainly done it... well into the triple-digits worth. We don't say "let go to Such and Such this summer" -- we pick up the phone and say "bro, let's hit the river," and we're on the water shortly thereafter. Unless it's getting really serious on the Deschutes and its world-class rafting -- that's a couple of hours away and requires planning the night before.

I would wager that the helmets that Milton is familiar with are a lot more purple.

Re: whitewater
Did the RG run in maybe 1993 I think, not sure exactly, but know that the prior year I had my first trip on the Arkansas river doing the Browns Canyon run (upriver), which I recommend highly over the gorge. More action, more whitewater.KC Scott wrote:few of us talking about rafting on radio tonight -
we're taking the kids to Royal Gorge this summer.
First time we did the Gorge was April 94 - huge runoff from the snow.
Liked it so well, went back and did it again with my daughter who was 7-8 at the time. Wasn't sure they would let her go but they put her in the middle of the raft with a strap to hold onto and we had a blast. We had a great guide and went down that river just looking for trouble.

Decent looking run -- pretty run of the mill around these parts, but then again, we have that "topography" thing.
I'd yawn and sip my beer in the driftboat... decent ride in an inflatable.

I'm telling you Scott, if you haven't been thru the Browns Canyon section of that river, you really should check it out instead of doing the gorge again.

Because I had the good fortune to be born in a cool place, and have exercised good judgement in staying, so running a river, catching a fish, hanging out in the mountains, and enjoying the beach, desert, and having anything else you'd ever want to do outside available to me, doesn't require months of planning, and big travel?
Yeah, thinking about it, that does make me pretty darn cool. Thanks for the reminder.

I can do all those things except for hanging out in the mountains. Actually I can do that...we call it hogging.Dinsdale wrote:Because I had the good fortune to be born in a cool place, and have exercised good judgement in staying, so running a river, catching a fish, hanging out in the mountains, and enjoying the beach, desert, and having anything else you'd ever want to do outside available to me, doesn't require months of planning, and big travel?
I can't go to the desert either, but nobody likes deserts.

I didn't compare anything, I said I can do those things.
Van, I haven't lived in Chicago in over a year, but yes, it has beaches. A level 10 geography guy should know its smack dab on one of the largest lakes in the world. And before you start going all beach snob on me, I'll have you know I grew up in Sarasota hanging out on Siesta Key practically 24/7, so I know a thing or two about real beaches. But I'm not picky. The only criteria needed for a beach is sand, water and hot women.

Mgo, yeah, I'm going to have to go all Beach Snob on you. The shores of Lake Michigan do not a proper beach make.
And since you moved back to Michigan, where are your beaches now, much less the whitewater rafting?

Re: whitewater
When we here on the "West Coast" talk about going to the beach... our first thought is the Pacific Ocean or some other Ocean around the world.
The last thing we think of is going to a lake, pond, or river... even if we do have the two deepest lakes in the United States (Crater Lake in Oregon close to the California/Oregon border... and Lake Tahoe in California)
When we think of bad-ass rivers on the "West Coast" we go by deaths.
The Kern River(California)... has 257 deaths since 1968 and six last year.
The highest mountain range in the lower 48 (California)... has a tendency to produce such results.
Oh yeah, when we go to "the Beach" here in the San Francisco Bay Area... this is what the water looks like from our beach.

Unless there's a tidal wave, the Pacific doesn't lend itself to adversity or character. If it had an adverse season, everyone wouldn't be a crystal-staring, new age wanker. Or a gun-toting shut-in.
Hockey helmets in rubber rafts are for amateurs, 10,000 tons displacement are a better bet.

Would you like to try that again in "English" ???
We don't speak "French" down here in the Mediterranean climate of Northern California.

Re: whitewater
In English, If you had a bit of snow and ice you wouldn't be a self-indulgent, myopic shit-head. You'd have depth and character.

Even the Wolverine is leaving Canada for the friendly confines of Northern California... just a few hours away from San Francisco... in the Tahoe National Forest.
It's good to see even a weasel is smarter than a Canadian.

This is so over-the-top, shockingly ignorant, I'm not even sure how to respond.
Winter = 25-30 foot swells.
Late summer = 3-4 foot swells.
And no, no one is wearing a swimsuit in the Pacific in winter. Someone else can clarify, but I think they're suited up as far south as San Diego in winter...
Dumbass.
