I turned off the A/C for the first time in a week and cranked up the attic fan. Went to bed with the soothing sound of thunder crashing in the distance which is like a lullaby to me.
Bet it's on now. Checking in at 90° at 11:00 AM. Nice to see somebody got rain... Complete swing-and-miss here. My tomatoes have been drinking like hawgs since 9:30 this morning.

BTW, reading the U&L try to go all heat 'bode on the Flyover is like Mikey trying to grill Copper River salmon... [/deadpan]

Bro - while there's little-to-no humidity, don't underestimate the heat of the Rogue Valley... which it does for a much longer stretch than the Flyover.

Since I've been working outside there (and will be for a few weeks), it's been nice that it's been "unseasonably cool," as per the locals -- upper 80's to low 90's. And now that July has come, that will quickly change. Get a good inversion going (frequent), and it's 105 all day, cooling to 80-85 at night.

Regardless -- your neck of the woods is known for... nothing. The Rogue Valley is where Earnest Hemmingway, Zane Grey, Jack London spent much of their time, fishing for salmon and steelhead, shooting critters, and being hot.

And like Derron, if I was going to move somewhere, that's where it would be -- natures freaking wonderland... except it's freaking hot as fuck there. If it weren't for snow in the surrounding mountains and the associated rivers, that area would be a crispy-assed bitch (like the east side of the state, where it's also hot as fuck).

Pretty crazy how the weather works out sometimes..
We should be in an oven mode around here where 20 + days over 100 is just another summer but our weather has been nothing short of outstanding so far this year. Today's 88 and the rest of the week in the low 90's and we have had only 2 or 3 days that were actually hot. Gonna be tough once it gets going though and it'll happen guaranteed.

Derron,
That restaurant is the one near downtown GP next to the river right? I had dinner and drinks there one afternoon...Nice place.

If anyone ever finds themself hungry in that neck of the woods, just north of GP, right off I5 (MM 76) is the Wolf Creek Inn... one of the coolest places to eat, EVAR.

Another Jack London hangout while he wrote short stories.

A rare case of the state running something well.

Aaaaand BTW -- the weather is so comfortable, there's a really bad golf score with my name all over it this afternoon.

Although I'm going to try a slightly different strategy this time out, and maybe hit the ball onto the fairways and greens and stuff, since my current strategy that doesn't seem to involve those things isn't working of late.

I'll try not to whiff the driver into the next climate zone, since I hear it's hot.

No..the one in the picture is about 20 miles west of Grants Pass right on the Rouge river. It is called the OK Corral , and it pretty damn nice. You can get there by road as well, but the jet boat trip is a hell of a lot more fun. You go up through the Hellgate Caynon ( sup Butch Cassidy / Sundance Kid filmed there, among many others).

http://www.hellgate.com/dinner.php

The one you are thinking of is just across the street from the Hellgate Tours office. Can't remember the name, but great meals there as well, and that is where they load the boats for the excursions.

There you have it. Nothing but world class barbecue and a penchant for repetitive insults here. Never mind that Missouri native sons single-handedly won two World Wars (we have the monuments to prove it), carried the mail, and provisioned the expansion of the American West. Not to mention our kin and kith populated a little known U&L backwater called Oregon enough for it to actually achieve statehood. But why let history get in the way of a particularly bad take?

But clearly, a severe lack of Internet no-it-alls locally is destined to set us back hours.

Who knew that our heat falls severely short of U&L standards as well? Even our misery comes in second best.

Oh, I’m sure we’ll get around hashing out the weather again in six months, and U&L cold is sure to defy even the continental extremes published in the paper each day. Guy-who-works-outdoors-in-Oregon-every-day out front will tell you.

BTW, Hemingway got his start as a reporter at the Kansas City Star. But if you’re proud of a nut-bag author that offed himself with a shotgun blast to the grill and caught lots of fish in your state, then I guess I am too… :meds:

Yes it is my pool. Its a pool cage---screened in. Keeps out most of the critters and debris. I have quite a bit of privacy with shrubs and hedges in a low density housing area. Most cool swimming under the stars and a full moon.

Biggest 36 hour temp swing ever was in...

Do I need to bother?

Seneca, over on the Dryside, hit -56 one morning. The next afternoon, it was 66.

But no, I'm not disputing your miserable weather. Can't compete out here (unless one goes to the Cascades in winter, but then again tere's skiing and snowmobiling and whatnot).

So, you have:

-No scenery to speak of

- Shit for outdoor activities, and no weather to enjoy them if you did

-A culture that consists of activities performed by fat people

-And an apparent complete lack of UHaul rentals

Sounds like paradise... I'll acquiesce to the BODE.

Yes, because if I ever wanted to control the temperature around a pool (in FL, no less) I'd surely build a glass enclosure around it. That'll keep it comfortably cool in the FL summertime.

Yeah, that reminds me... also, if I enclose a pool, I'll want to make sure it's air conditioned. That's completely logical 'cuz we all know people love to take a dip when it's nice and cool outside.

I can actually swim year round. I have a solar heater enough for most of the year and a heat pump for winter. I can keep the water at 85º even on the coldest days. It's a small pool 12x24 feet and from 4 to 6 feet deep, but that makes it easier to maintain both physically and chemically. My master bedroom and family room all access the pool with glass sliders, the sitting room with French doors and a pool bath with a door to the pool. Nice L shaped under truss lanai along the south and east sides where there are chairs, tables, grill etc. Can sit out there even if it is raining. Very nice lay out indeed and a place to gain inspiration for all my rants and raves. (-:

I'll have admit, I can't use mine year round, unless I wanted to heat it with propane - much too expensive. With solar heat I can usually start in April and use it through October. Oh well, the price you pay to live in paradise, I guess.

I have a 28 ft round above ground with a decent sized deck on it.

One thing I have, that I've never seen on another above ground is a big ass slide that used to live at someone's inground.

Mounting the slide was a fair bit of work. It needed new legs which I got made up by the local muffler shop out of galvanized exhaust pipe. I figured it has to be mounted in concrete, so I beefed up a section of the deck with a few extra piers and poured a slab about 8 inches thick. This redneck setup has wprked quite well for about 8 years.

I will see if I can get some pics up soon. My self of steam can handle it. If those deck pics didn't kill it, nothing will.

BTW Scott, your di.....pool might be bigger than mikey's, but, his absolutely kills yours overall. That fukking place is nicer than most resorts.

it ain't the biggest pool, but, I'll bet it's street urchin capacity has to be in excess of 500. Wouldn't be much need for any solar heating with that crowd, either. Prolly need to stock up on shock though.

Been thinking of opening it up on the weekends to the local mvscal population...but there aren't any. Now, if all the Messicans came and jumped in the overflow would prolly wash away our neighbor's house. Can't allow that to happen. I have to limit the occupancy to one coon at a time, and he's not allowed off the steps. Don't want to be responsible for drowning the neighborhood coon.

Seriously Mikey - that is one awesome set up - props
Thanks. We moved into this house in 1999 and thought about it for a year before deciding to do the pool thing. With pre-teen kids we thought it would be better to have friends coming to our house than having our kids hanging out with strangers.

This is what the yard looked like before the pool went in. You couldn't even walk on that strip of exposed aggregate with bare feet.

This house was a trip when I toured it. Amazed someone put a hot tub in the house... and we've had a couple of... errr... adventures with that over the years.

Nice skylight (and spa). The original plans for our house (which we got from the previous owner) included a few skylights, but they were never installed. We could use them.

The guy who eventually installed our pool came over to look at our yard, sat down, and basically sketched out the entire thing freehand exactly as it went in. We had a color rendering in a few days after that. The guy is fucking amazing at visualizing pools in any situation.

http://www.sandiego-pools.com/minishowcase/index.php

The worst part of it was that we got started in April or May and then had to stare at a large hole in our back yard all summer because one of their subcontractors went out of business or something, and didn't get the pool done until late September. We got a couple weeks of use out of it before closing it down for the winter.
