Can't argue with your choice of song for memoriam.....

Re: RIP, Jon Lord.
Yeah, I know this selection is a bit predictable, but I chose it for personal reasons. I was the oldest kid in my family, so no older siblings to influence my musical tastes. I had older cousins, but usually only saw them around the holidays, so not a ton of interaction there. I remember when I was about 8, one of my classmates brought in the old 45 (some of the younger turks in here won't get that reference) of this song. Immediately, even at that young age, I realized this was nothing like anything I had ever heard my parents listen to. I was blown away. Not long after, someone brought in a 45 of Brownsville Station's "Smokin' in the Boys Room." Granted, the title of that song held greater appeal to our pre-adolescent sensibilities, but I recognized immediately that "Smoke on the Water" was the far superior song, even at that young age. More than any single song, this one had the greatest influence on my taste in music.
A number of years later, while driving and listening to a rock station, I found out that Jon Lord was only about 3 years younger than my parents. I was so blown away I had to pull the car over to the side of the road.
Great keyboardist. RIP.

Another selection, appropriate since our own Van's title comes from a lyric in this song. The intro also shows Lord at his best, imho:

Definitely my favorite Purple song, and it deserved a much better video. That has to be the worst video ever affixed to a great song. And yeah, that whole opening keyboard riff followed by the ominous rolling bass line, then the drums and finally Blackmore's intro, that's one of the top ten most badass beginnings to any song. It's certainly my favorite keyboard intro.

For all his millions, you'd think Blackmore could afford a string clipper.

So weird to see Ritchie playing a 335.
Anyway, and to think he traded all that in for this...

I know. I wasn't speaking in general, just that specific song. I like Deep Purple.

Two of the best live shows I ever saw were DP shows. RIP to one of the all time greats.

Re: RIP, Jon Lord.
True story. I went to a Blue Jays game in '98, the first time I'd been to a MLB game in a long while. Each player picked a song, and the intro to the song would be played when the player came to bat. Ed Sprague picked this song. It was the only song I recognized. I became an Ed Sprague fan that day.Van wrote:Definitely my favorite Purple song, and it deserved a much better video. Anyway, yeah, the keyboard intro backs up Spray's earlier point that Lord made the keyboards sound like you wouldn't expect them to sound.
A few interesting tidbits on Lord which I encountered on his Wiki page (so I don't vouch 100% for their credibility):
1. Supposedly David Coverdale fired him from Whitesnake in order to lower the band's average age (Lord was in his early 40's at the time) and make them more MTV-friendly. That led to the re-formation of the MkII Deep Purple lineup in advance of Perfect Strangers.
2. Lord and Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice married twin sisters.
Deep Purple isn't the only band in this category, but they're way, way overdue for induction into the R&R HOF. Maybe Lord's death will make it happen. But it's sad it had to come to that.

Interesting how the same thing can represent totally different things to different people.Sudden Sam wrote:Deep Purple is only 60s and 70s to me.
To me, Deep Purple was the MkII lineup -- Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord and Paice. Yes, I know there were different incarnations of the band, but that's far and away the best and most memorable lineup.
Of course, that takes Deep Purple out of the 60's category for me (since the MkII lineup didn't form until 1971) and also puts the 80's into play.
