Jim Mora, Jr's idea of Job One: Tug on Superman's cape.

Post by Van »

Sheer brilliance. Epic move, showing your ass before the season has even begun. Seriously, dude...stay classy! You think 50-0 was an aberration, that they couldn't very well drop something equally horrific on your dumb ass too?

Go ahead, just keep poking a stick at 'em, clever boy. Watch what happens.

"We don't have murders near UCLA," says Jim Mora.

"When you're talking about UCLA, it's one of the great schools in the world -- not just America, but in the world. It's a safe, beautiful campus in a great area of town. I mean, we don't have murders one block off our campus."

Is there anything factually wrong with what he said? Other than one of your finest choosing to lop of a head in Brentwood....

He was not even aware of the most recent murders that took place this year...or I would've agreed it could have been insensitive...but, even more to the point....

This era of SuC domination will begin to ebb after this year.

Of course it will, because that's when the brunt of the sanctions will truly begin to show their effect.

Is what he said factually true? Yes, it is, although I'd be willing to bet that there have been murders that occured within a block of UCLA's campus, if not on campus. Sure, Westwood is a far better area than downtown, but a head coach has to know better than to say crap like like that when the cameras are rolling.

There's this whole taboo about negative recruiting, which is precisely what he's engaging in here.

If USC wanted to respond in kind—sticking strictly to the facts, mind you—Lane Kiffin could go on camera and say something along the lines of, "We don't recruit a bunch of pussies while fostering an environment where losing like utter pansies is not only accepted, it's expected. We have a world-class university here, plus we have an ongoing tradition of football excellence. We try not to lose 50-0 to our cross-town rivals. Not that I'm specifically naming names, of course."

he's also not making any friends with the City of LA PR people with that comment...and in a non-college sports unless you are winning big market....alienating some pretty powerful sympathies city-wide with some serious perception management tools at their disposal...one of the media capitals of the world....probably not the best idea.

If i'm Kiffin i release a statement that says, hey, LA is a city with some problems and some of us are working to make that better for every one...cite the previous Trojan coach's work in rough, urban areas ("Pete understood this...")...not retreat into our country club cloister...it doesn't make any sense since USC is an exclusive private school...but still works. Kiff says we're here to give opportunity to people of all backgrounds who want to work hard, go to class (it's PR), and win football games. we can't hide from the realities of the great city we live in...but we CAN work to make it better. together.

mora is trying to talk to recruit moms. and this statement steals away that rhetorical appeal. plus, now Mora is a punching bag for every sports writer in LA wanting to curry favor among the demos. and sports writers have no ethics so they'll go after him given the chance.

am impressed with Mora's recruiting so far, however. Dorrell and Neu were such lame hires so who knows?

Did Hackett recruit a bunch of pussies? What if Riley hadn't turned you down and you didn't luck onto Chetey Carroll? But you did get lucky and have temporary scoreboard...like we did during our 8 straight run....Yes, we have a complete imbecile for an AD...but maybe it will be his turn to get lucky....one thing I can already tell, there will be no "pussies" getting PT under the Mora regime....and Superman's cape? Do you have a receipt???

USC's scoreboard over UCLA is hardly confined to the Pete Carroll era...

A PM? Nope. No new PMs in my inbox.

We will see in the next five years, but at least things aren't looking as bleak for USC as I thought they would be. Despite the scholarship reductions they already have a #1 ranked class coming in for 2013, and if they can make a proper success of this 2012 season they will benefit from a major boost in prestige and desirability to future recruits. A national title mid-sanctions would go a long way towards softening that blow.

If it wasn't it is now....he's killed the playing careers of Chris Ward, Wade Yandall, Torian White, and Patrick Larimore, all of whom had to take medical retirements.... :|
