Well, that's not really true. During WWII Hitler used your and Barry's leadership model. FDR, OTOH, did it the right way. Ike/MacArthur had complete control on the scene.

The fact that you are clacking out your take in English rather than German is a pretty fukking good indication of which is the proper method.

And even if you do prefer the Hitler war leadership model, publishing a get the fukk outta dodge date during a war is mindnumbingly stupid. The proper answer to any war's end date is "when we win".

Of course FDR was in charge and his generals/admirals could not act without his approval. High level strategical decisions had to be run by him. My point is that FDR knew that he wasn't a military expert and didn't try to act like one, unlike Hitler who figured that a few years of infantry experience as a corporal was good enough to run things strategically and tactically.

Hitler at the top of his game was the equal of the General Staff. He was almost a savant in his capacity to absorb and process massive amounts of detail in all the different facets of government. Going after Russia, as stupid as it was, might have actually worked for him, had he went there as a liberator rather than a conqueror. Uncle Joe wasn't exactly Mr popularity in the Ukraine in the summer of 1940.

His brilliance laid in being able to whip up a crowd and stomp a mud hole in the few that didn't whip up sufficiently. The fact that there were successes early on was more a testament to the German people than to him. Put him in charge of a bunch of lazy mexicans rather than Aryans and he don't look so good.
