It sounds like it's possible your liver is in bad shape. Have you seen the doctor to check your liver function yet? Usually they check the enzymes with AST and ALT screenings. You can Google those 2 liver function tests.

What happens is the liver can only process at a certain rate and is especially compromised if there is significant damage. Depending on what prescription drugs you are taking that even slows down the metabolism of everything that much more.

Let me ask you something. When you drink do you get a ringing in your ears? That mimics a condition called tinnitus which is unrelated to what is called ototoxicity. Any MD like Tigrdog could probably give you better info.

As far as meds, I take Neurontin (Gabapentin) 2-3 times a day. Only recently upped it (only took one in the morning for years and years). Supposed to have been taking 3 a day all this time. I think it's 500 mg.

Lotrel - 5-10 mg (?)

Simvastatin (no idea dosage)

Simvastin - is an anti cholesterol drug and you're taking between 5 to 80 mg/dose. No big deal there. Very common drug. Just don't drink grape fruit juice with it and I'm sure you know that.

Lotrel - is a combination drug to treat high blood pressure and that's a very low dosage. No problems there.

Neurotin (gabapentin): This one stumps me. You are supposed to take that 3 x's/day. The max you can take is 1800 mg/day. You are now taking 1500mg/day. You have any idea why you've been prescribed this med? It's commonly for controlling seizures and for neuropathic pain.

I'm guessing you don't have seizures since you still have a drivers license... interesting.

Really why? It's in my scope of practice to know what these drugs do. Doctors prescribe medicine, explain what they do and nurses are required to know them. If you read the above post, I told Sam to ask a doctor then explained what the drugs are for.

Hit 50 this year and about 5 years ago I noticed that the 1/2 day hang over lasts about 3 1/2 days. Liver is not compromised according to the quack, but his prescription was "moderation". :doh:

Regarding drinking, I can still get hammered just like in the good ole days. The difference is that I can not get hammered the next day....and the next day....etc. Which ever part of the body it is that handles recuperation kinda throttles back to about 4% of what it was when we were 23. For me, I first noticed this in my early to mid thirties. It sucks until you simply realize this fact and manage to space at least a month or two between bouts of getting trashed.

For those hard core alkies out there that do continue to get smashed every day, I chalk it up to gemetics or sheer willpower. Anyway, they generally keel over dead before they get their keys to the SS lock box, which is mighty white of them, IMO.

Years ago I would pound down a 12-pack of Lite. Now, my beer consumption is generally one or two microbrews. I may have some red wine later in the evening (which has apparently jacked up my good cholesterol, typically between 75 and 80). Occasionally I'll get carried away and drink the entire bottle of wine, but I can't remember the last time I felt hungover.

I can't drink straight liquor or take shots like I used to, so I usually have to mix the hard stuff with a little bit of water or soda. I normally just stick to beer or wine nowadays, but I can still manage to kill a 12-pack during Sunday football games.

If I do drink liquor, its usually Crown Reserve or JD mixed with a little 7up. I do love me some spicy Bloody Mary's from time to time.
