North Coast CA- South Coast OR PET

POW - MIA Memorial outside North Bend, OR. National POW - MIA Day was last week. Part of a great Veterans Memorial there.

On the beach front road in Crescent City, CA

Image

Salmon eating federally protected sons of bitches waiting at the mouth of the Smith River for a world class run of chinook salmon and native steelhead to start any day now.

Image

Loeb State Park about 8 miles up the Chetco River form Brookings OR. Great fly fishing there.

Image

Chinook salmon fishery starting at the mouth of the Rouge River. Another world class fishery. Take this number of boats and multiple it about 10 times for next weeks action.

Image

Mouth of the Coquille River system at Bandon, OR.

Image

Sitting on the beach eating lunch north of Gold Beach OR.

Image

Shore Acres State park, just outside Coos Bay, OR. Former estate now a state park.

Image

Looking north from Shore Acres State Park.

Image

Sitting in the Pig and Pancake eating breakfast last Sunday morning when this loud rumble , and the building starts shaking, and this thing comes hauling as down Hwy 101, with flags flying, couple of dudes hanging off the thing. They were going to a Veterans observance at Chinook Winds Casino, and just drove this thing about 3 miles down the highway. Local cops told them to go ahead, it was a state highway, and they wanted to get pictures of it as well. Went to the Doobie Bros concert there on Saturday night, excellent show, maybe a 2,500 seat house. Got to visit with Tom Johnson and Pat Simmons later on. Oh, and won enough to pay for the concert, 3 days of meals, and the hotel.

Image

The submerged forest at Neskowin that emerged a couple of years ago with the beach erosion. These stumps are over 5,000 years old.

Trip is over, but the sun rises over my backyard on another beautiful Northwest early fall day.

You were in my home-away-from-home of the last 11 months... almost done with that job, finally. I'll miss all gthe friends I made in LC (not that I don't get there outside of work, as well).

That is, when I wasn't in the Rogue Valley (BTW, Mikey - while the Rogue is super cool rafting, there's even cooler places in Oregon to raft (including on the Rogue system). I might be taking a driftboat trip down the mighty Rogue to slay some of their fine chinook on my next work trip... good enough for Ernest Hemmingway, Zane Grey, and Jack London to spend their days fishing on, almost good enough for me.

The submerged forest at Neskowin that emerged a couple of years ago with the beach erosion. These stumps are over 5,000 years old.
My old buddy's family owned a house immediately north of there (2nd house north of Slab Creek, or whatever they call it these days). The stumps have come and gone several times over the last 20 years. Stormy winters wash the sand away, calm summers build it back up. But a 5000 year old petrified forest sticking out of the beach is kinda cool.

Spent many, many, many a drunken time sitting at that very spot (and climbing Proposal Rock, and trolling for seahags at Maxwells down in LC, and eating at Sambo's).

Having free run of a house right on the beach didn't suck (it got sold a few years ago).

Cool PET, although little I haven't seen in person (never been to Gold Beach, believe it or not). I think I've got work coming up in Brookings, maybe. Been doing more exploring on work roadies lately.

BTW, Spray -- that pic I "quoted" shows Cascade Head on the north end. If you had kept your fat ass hiking over the top of it from LC, you'd end up there (hours later and quite winded).

Susan would read or watch anything with vampires so of course we had to see the Twilight movies, the Underworld saga, HBO's True Blood, and anything else in which male-model ass goblins were likely to get all hot and bothered at the sight of a lissome nape just begging to be drained.

Gorgeous.

Reminds me of several of the float and trout streams I've been on in the Ozarks, most notably the Buffalo National River in northwest Arkansas.

Thanks for the great comments.

One of the nice things about this trip was some of the people I met. The wife was helping Mom pack her shit for a move to Colorado, and I only do so much of that shit.

Took my fishing poles and started out. Ran into a Vietnam vet at the first fishing hole. I wear a boonie hat with a Marine Corps globe and anchor on it when I am out in the sun. It seems to attract some really great people. This Vietnam vet was a blast to talk to, then when a seal started getting salmon, he went berserk, throwing rocks at you fucking low life salmon stealing cocksucker, we should shoot every one of you.

Next up was a Korean war vet, and we spent an hour or so comparing travel and fishing notes. Great guy. Then up at the next hole, the one at Loeb Park, which by the way is at extremely low water, there was this 80 year old guy, and had his Ford Ranger stuck in the rocks, and was trying to dig it out. I just pulled over there, and got my tow strap out and said lets do this the easy way there old man..got him pulled out and he said all I got to offer you is a cold beer, and I said that is all I could ever expect. He was a retired firefighter and spent his days panning for gold up that drainage. Also a Vietnam vet.

I spent more time bullshitting that I did fishing, and it was just fine. Great people when you get out in the boondocks like that. Even got a pass from the game warden when I neglected to check the temporary regs and was fishing in a closed area.

Got a couple more 2-3 days trips coming up for fall colors and salmon fishing on the coast. See if I can get some decent pictures of those too.

Ahhhhh… nice. Spent a day in Neskowin a couple years ago. Beautiful little town. Had a pizza at some quazi Italian joint, or something like that. Loaded with garlic (awesome). Took the rest home, through Tilamook, and the car smelled of garlic for a day or so afterwards. Can’t remember the name of the place. Was near the post office if I recall? Also, played a round of golf at the course right there which I also can’t remember the name of (sure Dins knows).

Marsh Meadows is the name now. Fitting name for sure. Used to be Neskowin Golf Course. 9 holes, short season, under water about 6 months out of the year.

Correct calling it a cow pasture, or goat ranch as we in the golf business used to call those 9 hole shit holes. Real low budget operation. No irrigation except on the greens. None required when your course is about 2 feet or less of above normal high tide in a estuary environment. I think they open about mid June and close in late October or when the first rain floods the fairways.

But any day playing golf is way better than a day working anyway, no matter the course. Beers cheap too.

Never played. Drove over the bridge while the entire course was underwater a zillion times.

Must be the one Ken is talking about (I seem to remember Ken speaking fondly of Neskowin, which is a town of <500, and huge stomping grouds for Younger Dins) -- but remember, there's another one right across 101 going up the hill... Slab Creek, or Neskowin Creek, or whatever -- they change the name of that creek every 10 years or so. (Edit... deep-Googling is your friend -- it's Hawk Creek.)

Actually, considering the town is 2 blocks by 2 blocks, having 2 shitty 9-holers ain't bad (I'm told the one on the hill isn't too bad).

And a note to Derron's new fans -- his thread title is a misnomer... the fine PET covers a whole shitload of area. Kinda two similar but different regions of the state. Homeboy covered some ground.

There's only ever been one business in Neskowin (that closes at like 8 or something stupid) -- the Hawk Creek Cafe (after my last edit, I remembered the name -- knew it was one of the myriad creek names). They've got the little store and bar, too.

My best bud got married right against the rock there at sunset... maybe I can drum up pics, as Mother Nature was quite kind to the photographers.

Yes, Hawk Creek, it was. Was on the other side of 101, at the base of the mountains. Before I played, I remember driving up the hills, overlooking the ocean. Some great pics from up there. I still contest that the coast of Oregon, and the general PNW, is some of the greatest scenery anywhere.

I have to agree, the Oregon coast is pretty darn cool. Part of the family summer vacation we ventured down the entire OR coast from Cape Disappointment WA all the way down.

Spent 2 nights in Newport Bay with short 1/4 to 1/3 mile walk along to the beach to where this thing had washed up.

The city is Newport, the body of water is Yaquina Bay. You might have been there when my coworker and I stopped for a cheesey buffet junch at Izzy's on the bluff at Agate Beach (north end of Newport), where we were amused by the sign they had boasting of their view:

Probably one of the last people to play that course. They closed up shop here in the last couple of years and let the course go back native. The kid running the place was working himself into the ground trying to keep a 9 hole course with pretty low rounds played because of the location. A few locals played there, and the RV park down the road kept a few golfers coming in, but pretty tough area to keep enough rounds coming through to pay the bills and get any ROI.

Too bad, because it was a great scenic location, but you need duffers on the course in sufficient numbers to make it pay. Being located north of Lincoln City where there is an 18 hole on a VERY busy road, and it is owned by Chinook Winds Casino now, unless you were making the trip up the coast you would never come across either of the two courses in Neskowin. No other course up to the north for 50 miles to Tillamook when you get to Bay Breeze, which is not that great of a course anyway.

Coastal golf courses struggle in Oregon, unless you are Bandon Dunes then you make major bank with people flying into North Bend to play that course. The three courses at Bandon Dunes have been a major shot in the economic arm to the North Bend / Coos Bay area. The ramp at the airport at North Bend, (OTH), just fills up with all kinds of upscale aircraft offloading RMF's, and Bandon Dunes has shuttles waiting to haul them to the course about 40 miles south.

It isn't quite the nonstop pounding rain once you get that far south, compared to the North Coast... there's that.

And I believe it's no more than 20 miles from the North Bend Airport to Bandon... something like that.

True, although about 6 of the holes at Bandon Dunes are seaside, and with an good on shore flow, your lucky to stand up let alone drive straight. Of course, that is in the off season, when you can play the courses for about $ 45 each , versus in season at about triple that.

22.67 miles per map quest. My bad.

Last I heard, offseasson was up to about $75 (but you don't need a caddie), and peak season is around $250.

When I worked on an extended job in Coos Bay, the dishwasher at our hotel bar was also a caddie at Bandon -- gave me some cool tips about when to book a trip to avoid the wind, rain, and peak season rates. One of these years I'll make it, so I can insult the world's finest public course with my special brand of suck.

Probably right. My frame of reference is a few years old. I sold them a bunch of turf equipment back when they built the first course and got to play it before it even opened, and then once after it opened. I then played Pacific Dunes as well before it opened and then once later on. Never paid a dime to play them. Or paid a dime to play Pebble, Spyglass, The Olympic, Riveria, Barton Creek, Camelback and a few others. One of the perks of the turf business in the day. That is when I had a 7 handicap as well.

Caddies do fairly well at the 3 courses now. Not a bad gig to pickup a few hunskey a week cash.
