An OUTSTANDING start to the Padres off-season. No wonder this guy produced for us when we got him last year.....
SAN DIEGO - San Diego Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal has been suspended after violating Major League Baseball's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
According to a statement from the Commissioner's Office, Grandal will have to serve a 50-game suspension without pay for testing positive for testosterone, which is on MLB's list of banned substances.
Grandal's suspension will be effective at the start of the 2013 season.
Padres officials issued the following statement regarding the 23-year-old catcher's suspension:
"We were disappointed to learn of the suspension of Yasmani Grandal for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention & Treatment Program. We fully support Major League Baseball's policy and its efforts to eliminate performance enhancing drugs from our game. Per the protocol outlined by Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, we will not comment further on this matter."
Grandal was acquired last December from the Cincinnati Reds in the Mat Latos trade. He made his MLB debut in June.
