Consider the evidence, not Israel. They all know that someone has to govern the million or so Gazans, and neither Egypt or Israel want to do it.
Israel tried to install Fatah by stealth, but that was foiled and we saw Fatah militants being thrown off roofs. So now the only viable option is keep Hamas there - which makes operations like Cast Lead quite difficult to understand. Before Cast Lead the Palestinians could lob a few glorified fire crackers into a couple of border towns like Sderot. Since Cast Lead, Hamas have developed the ability to launch real missiles into Jurusalem and Tel Aviv.

Israel's strategy seems to be move in kill hundreds upon hundreds of civilians, destroy a massive amount of civilian infrastructure, keep Hamas in power and do little to disrupt the rockets - rinse and repeat every 3 years.

all told, there were about 110,000 Americans killed fighting the japanese and another 250k wounded, so referencing the 2,500 killed in the attacks at Pearl Harbor is really disingenous....as far as ending the war, the US was left with three options....invade japan, which would have resulted in massive loss of lives of our soldiers, form a blockade which would have spared us further losses, but would have resulted in a mass starvation which would have killed millions of japanese civilians, and gone on for who knows how long...or nuke them, which was the option we chose....looking at it realistically, that was the option that probably resulted in the least number of people being killed....heavy handed? sure it was but it was the action that probably cost the least number of lives....I think between Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there were about 200 k killed right?
