Cheap ass contractors hired to build cheap ass homes for the too poor or too stupid that don't know the difference between a solid foundation and a house built from straw, that's who.

But I'll give you credit for the solid deck, if you sank those 8x8 posts at least 18" into the ground in a 16" diameter well of concrete. Properly strapped to that 'foundation', they might keep it standing in something less that an F2 tornado or class 1 hurricane...at least on the sides you built the deck on.

The whole thing is poured, trust me. It is not spackled over block. Not the prettiest, by any stretch, but, it's a few years older than you and appears to be hanging in there. The "column" with the rebar, (actually steel pipe of about an inch diameter) was poured at the same time, as best I can tell.

The house was built by a yokel. And I believe he did every last bit of it himself. As you can see, the foundation was forms were boards, not pallets though. It was formed with 2 x 10s or 12s, forget which, exactly.. I know this for 2 reasons. First off, you can measure the lines. The other way is to go into the basement and look up at the first floor joists. A number of them have concrete stains! Those frugal old yankees didn't waste shit!

Anyhoo, everything is still plumb, level, square, etc... So, I guess he did a good enough job.

2 x 6's, maybe. Look at the deck joists you say are 2 x 10's and then compare to the seams in that wall.

Do yourself a favor. Put a 36" straightedge on any section of that wall and see what the deflection is. I'll wager it's at least 1/2" in some places, probably much more in others.

The most hilarious part? You spent mucho $$$ on buying all that CCA lumber to attach to that abortion. Talk about putting lipstick on a pig, you bought the farm.





cockaholic, this is what a proper poured in place concrete foundation looks like. Notice the outer walls used brick texture forms while the inner walls are smooth. Many contractors spend extra on aluminum forms that can create such an appearance and potential home buyers will pay extra for a home constructed on a foundation that will last 100 years or more.

Some of the seams are 6 inch, some 10. As I said, he was a frugal old yankee who made his own forms, then afterwards yanked them apart and used the materials in framing the place. He also built the houses on both sides of mine. None have fallen over.....yet. As for your pretty pictures, sure, modern forms can be made to make a poured wall look like whateverthefukk you want it to, but, it will not affect the structural integrity. I've never actually measured my wall deflection, but, I will and report back my findings.

No matter what I find, I'll still take it over the wheels/cinderblocks that pass for a foundation at casa wags.

My house was built in 1980 by a local contractor who used the aluminum forms (and 1035 carbon steel wall ties) my company sold him. The first thing I looked at was the foundation and while the house isn't all that special, it most assuredly has a solid PIP concrete foundation set upon an equally solid concrete footing. The walls have, at most, 1/8" deflection and haven't budged a fraction in 32 years. I know because I have measured.

You may be able to bullshit some people about the origin/condition of your foundation, but not me.

Grabbed a reasonably straight piece of trim I had kicking around the basement about 5 ft long. Held it along various places on the basement wall. Seeing as the wall has a bit of, uhhhh, texture, it is a bit tough to measure deflection, but I can say with a fair degree of confidence that there is no more than an 1/8th inch deflection over this distance. BTW, he did use ties. looks to be some sort of rectangular stock about 1/4 x 1/8 as best I can tell. I am sure this was likely pieces of cut up model T frame he had kicking around. :grin:
