It’s been a while… another on-line quiz:
http://www.impossible-quiz.com/
If ya wanna forget the debates within some of the other threads for a bit, take this quiz. Pretty interesting… a mix of vocab, trivia, logic, etc..
15/20 for me.
Missed #11 and after reading the explanation as to why, it became more clear. That’s a pretty damned good question.

Reasons listed below like one of the questions
Missed first one because I did 2/36 for snake eyes instead of 1/36 (but there are TWO ones, dammit!)
Missed 12oz gold
Missed 'blue' because I used Oct (when DST 'ends' instead of begins)
Missed last one

The only reason I didn't miss this is because I came across it a long time ago (Marilyn Vos Savant I think). I've taught graduate level probability classes and this one still seems crazy every time I come across it.Ken wrote:

I guessed on the last five because I was getting tired of it and got three of those wrong. The one with the dice was a really stupid mistake on my part.

I understand the explanation of the monte hall question, but, I still think it is wrong. It really is as simple as a 50/50 decision after one has been removed.

Stick to civics, and leave statistics/probablilities to the people with brains then.
Or you can use 3 pieces of paper and recreate the "dilemma" yourself. You'll find that switching doors results in exactly doubling your odds, over time.
How do you come up with 50/50 when dealing with 3 doors?
There's a 2-in-3 chance your initial guess is wrong, every time. Opening a door doesn't reduce or increase anything -- it merely gives you an unfair advantage in your 1-in-3 guess. Just because one of the doors is open, it does absolutely nothing to change your 1-in-3 odds. And since you know, for fact, that your initial guess had a 1-in-3 chasnce of being right, you also know, for fact, that the other 2 doors have a 2-in-3 chance of holding the prize.
Care to explain how those known odds of prize placement magically change due to the position of a door in front of it? Does the prize have sensors in it, and the ability to move itself should a door open in front of it?
No?
Then I guess those 2 doors you didn't pick still have a 2-in-3 chance of holding the prize. And when one of them is opened, guess what?
Yup, still 2-in-3. And your original selection is still 1-in-3. And since you know, for fact, one of the 2-3 chance doors has a goat behind it, guess what?
It means the remaining non-selected door has a 2-in-3 chance of holding the prize... nothing changed.
Since you're challenged in the probabilities department, we'll keep the lesson simple, and I won't get intoi the myriad otyher situations the same logic applies to -- certain card games being a prime example.

Dins, I understand the explanation, but it still seems to me that after one door has been exposed, it is simply an A/B pic. Guess I need to sit down with 3 pieces of paper and prove it to my self.
So, uhhh, when's the next civics test?

So, if there were 1000 doors and the host opened all except for your chosen door and one other (remember, he knows which door has the prize), you'd still remain with your original choice?smackaholic wrote:Dins, I understand the explanation, but it still seems to me that after one door has been exposed, it is simply an A/B pic. Re: It’s been a while… another on-line quiz:
Very true. I suspect much of my ability to do well on achievement and IQ tests has less to do with sheer brainpower than gamemanship and analytical ability to process bits of information that impact the choice I make. For instsance, for the question regarding phobias, I didn't know what that specific fear was, but was able to take a semi-educated guess based on the preceding letter "a" which denotes a lack of of something. Hence I chose the one legged woman answer, thus getting it right.Same here. I used to think that was saying something, but, when I look around at the public general today, I realize it ain't all that.
I got through many classes and tests in high school and college in the same way. I was a horrible student, but have a knack for picking up details in passing. Couple that with simple probability of a standard multiple choice question where you can generally throw one question out of four for being obviously wrong, you're down to a 33% chance of getting it correct. Then add in an ability to suss out an answer from later or previous questions on the test or from information gleaned while sleeping in classs, and a 50/50 chance is pretty good odds.
However, it was on essay questions where I shined. I was a veritable Dr. Freeze for the snowy blizzards I could put down on paper.

Re: It’s been a while… another on-line quiz:
I have that same dealio regarding tests. It's part being reasonably bright and part being good at ruling out bad answers and putting bits together to get possibly right answers. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough for UConn engineering school, so it was one and done and [homosmack softball] off to the navy [/homosmack softball].
BTW, I got that phobia one too, but completely pulled it out of my ass.

On the question about 4 choices of certain death/card/coin flips I went with the cyanide dinner. The other 3 choices are certain death. Eating cyanide isn't because it does not specify a lethal dose. It just says you will have cyanide for dinner.
