Yes Scott, agree with your assesment of 'Dredd'. I actually saw it at the local Harkins in 3D. Not too bad.
Much improved over Stallone's comedy version. Liked the fact that you never got to see the face of Dredd. Nice touch.
Speaking of adaptations, I'm hoping the new Star Trek "Into Darkness" can carry over what Abrahams did with the first re-boot.
Rumor has it Khan is going to show up, and the trailer has a shot at the end of it which reflects the scene where Spock dies in 'Wrath of Khan'.
You can see the trailer here.

Re: Dredd
I would not have guessed Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan.

Was thinking more along the lines of Bardem or del Toro to take Ricardo Montalban's place.

Re: Dredd
Not very good.
Barely any exposition on Cursed City/Cursed Earth and zero character development. Writing was practically non-existant.
Also, the after-effects digital blood was fucking cringe worthy.

Re: Dredd
Hey, I didn't say it was great, just more entertaining than that quasi-comedy crap that Stallone was in. While far from perfect, and yes, the script was pretty much non-existent, it still entertained from a good old-fashioned shoot-'em-up perspective. It is based on a comic after all. Exposition and depth are optional.
Now if you want an example of a clever comic turned into a giant turd of a movie, look no further than "Howard the Duck". Based on a clever and very funny comic by Marvel's Steve Gerber, George Lucas and company turned a great bit of satire and fantasy into a huge celluloid lump of crap. The only saving grace of the film is that Lea Thompson looked cute. Other than that, this was the standard bearer in how to fuck up a comic book translation into film.
Since Gerber has since passed away, I hope and pray that nobody tries to adapt any of his work in the future.
