Re: Marty Does Zeppelin
Good question, I'll have to fix that problem very soon. I had every Zep album and wore them the fuck out. By 1981, i had every Zep tape on cassette. Just never got around to getting Houses of the Holy on CD for some reason.Screw_Michigan wrote:How the hell do you not have Houses?
A crime, for sure.

Re: Marty Does Zeppelin
reviewing some of the tracks on that album, I'll have to go with this
the above vid goes straight from Over The Hills and Far Away into The Rain Song, both hauntingly beautiful songs... and yes, I am a dumb fuck for not having this in my CD collection.

Re: Marty Does Zeppelin
I would say an argument could be made for the intros of "Purple Haze," "Iron Man" and "Satisfaction" being as immediately distinguishable as that of "Whole Lotta Love," but yeah, that iconic opening stutter riff of WLL definitely has to be on the (very) short list.
For that matter, the first notes of "Stairway," "Kashmir," and "Dazed and Confused" are right there too. And what about "The Immigrant Song"?

yep, within the first two to four notes I immediately know the songFor that matter, the first notes of "Stairway," "Kashmir," and "Dazed and Confused" are right there too. And what about "The Immigrant Song"?
picking Zep album favorites is almost impossible
it would be much easier to pick least favorite songs off their albums, although I don't think I could pick one off Houses of The Holy, because I love every song on that disc
get out, get out while there's still time

Good call on "Smoke on the Water." One note in and you know. Another two I would add:

As Van also noted, "Layla" has to be included. Let's not forget Hendrix with "All Along the Watchtower" as well.Van wrote:I would say an argument could be made for the intros of "Purple Haze," "Iron Man" and "Satisfaction" being as immediately distinguishable as that of "Whole Lotta Love," but yeah, that iconic opening stutter riff of WLL definitely has to be on the (very) short list.

Re: Marty Does Zeppelin
Jay, I seriously considered adding Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" to the list until I decided that his "Purple Haze" still has the more immediately recognizable opening riff. Literally, that first stomping A♯ note on the low E string is all it takes. That riff is his equivalent of "Whole Lotta Love."

Re: Marty Does Zeppelin
Yes Van, I gotta agree. The opening riff of "Purple Haze" would go right into the top 5. While the one from "All Along the Watchtower" doesn't have the raw power of 'Haze' or something like "Smoke on the Water" or "Layla", I suppose the reason I prefer "Watchtower" is the song itself. While the Dylan original is of course nice, even Dave Mason did a better job with his cover. One thing of note about the Hendrix version of the song, most people aren't aware that Dave Mason actually played 12-string acoustic guitar on the track in the studio. It actually took him about 27 takes on the "turnaround" part of the songs introduction, due its' 'tricky' nature, to get it right.
Here's a photo of Dave Mason and Hendrix and his band from that period.

I'll make sure it is well represented. I'm working up a setlist now. Time constraints might come into play.War Wagon wrote:of course. I don't hold grudges.BSmack wrote:If I play every one of these songs next Saturday, will you forgive me?

Oh, and most of the material will be LIVE.
