Bucket List Rock Bands....

Based upon some of the good music our resident DJ's have been putting out, I was thinking which group of musicians would be great to see together, and which dudes gone would have been a good show. Post one living group and one dead group, but when you think about it, mixing styles and all, it gets hard. This is not a my drummer rocks, your's sucks, thing, just want to see what some of the combos are, and how they will vary according to individual taste. You can use a talent even if somebody else has them, to see how they mix up.

You get 3 guitar players in the living group, 2 electric and one acoustical, 1 bass player, drummer, piano, organ, Saxaphone / trombone and a lead vocalist. Same in the dead group. I had more trouble with my dead group guys, and don't really think I hit where I want.

Living Group

Guitars - Eric Clapton, Mark Knophler, and Tom Petty . Tom Petty on the acoustical.
Bass- Geddy Lee ( I was leaning to Jack Bruce, but Geddy is damn good. No vocals out of Geddy. )
Drums - Mick Fleetwood
Piano - Paul Rodgers .
Organ - Ray Manzerck.
Sax / bone - Mark Russo
Lead Vocals - Paul Rodgers, but want the rest of them on back up and some solo vocals

Dead Group

Guitar - Allen Collins, George Harrison, Roy Orbison on acoustical.
Bass - Leon Wilkinson
Drums - Keith Moon
Piano- Billy Powell
Organ - Jon Lord
Sax/bone - coming up empty here.
Vocalist - Jim Morrison.

I would like to see the knack in concert, heard they played my sharona at least three times in some shows. Then follow that up with Tommy Tutone playing 867-5309.

Current acts that I really enjoy are the Spazmatics, Jack Ingram, Robert Earl Keen, and Toby Keith.

Nice idea, but one of those set-ups that are not all that easy to fill. I like Keith Emerson of course and would probably put him on organ/synthesizer above anyone else. RIP vocalists make me want to go with hometown guy Ronnie Dio, arguably the best in hard rock/metal. So many decent guitar players makes that probably the toughest category to choose. If I could see a group in concert again and in their prime it would be ELP. That's about all the input I have.

Guitars - Early Zeppelin-era Jimmy Page, and Guthrie Govan. Insane versatility/creativity. Gabriela Quintero or Nancy Wilson on the acoustic.
Bass- John Paul Jones. It's a rock band. I don't need the bass player competing with the guitarists. Jones is the consumate musician who plays exactly what is needed, perfectly.
Drums - Marco Minnemann, though dude has to budge a little and be willing to play some blues.
Piano - Tori Amos. In this band, that'd be hilarious.
Organ - John Paul Jones...obviously.
Sax / bone - No sax. Instead I go with Ann Marie Calhoun on violin.
Lead Vocals - A young Ann Wilson, or perhaps Linda Perry.

Dead Group

Guitar - SRV and Jimi on the electrics, and Danny Gatton on the acoustic. That would be a freakshow.
Bass - Victor Wooten. Fine, so he's not dead. I would still love to hear him with SRV and Jimi.
Drums - Bonzo
Piano- Beethoven
Organ - Don't care. Any old dude from medieval Blighty who played spooky shit on a massive pipe organ.
Sax/bone - Again, a violinist instead of a sax player: Niccolò Paganini.
Vocalist - Hendrix

And this is why I'd want Ann Marie Calhoun on violin in a rock band over any sax player...

The Knack were very good live, but as Doug Fieger has since passed, I guess that wish is out. You might want to check out the group Bowling for Soup sometime, as they have some of that pop/badboy swagger of the Knack. Fat boy Chris Burney is a pretty funny sight and can move that blubber around.

Sad news, Alvin Lee of Ten Years After, has died. A statement posted on his official website read: "With great sadness we have to announce that Alvin unexpectedly passed away early this morning after unforseen complications following a routine surgical procedure.

"We have lost a wonderful and much loved father and companion, the world has lost a truly great and gifted musician."

Ah, yes...Dave Mason, Bill Nelson, and Django Reinhardt.

Just got a double Reinhardt CD from a guitarist friend. I was anxious to hear it, but, so far, I can't get into it.

I know what you mean. I'm not really into his music per se, it was his technique and influence that's what make him noteworthy to me. He could only play the fret with his index and middle finger, as his other two had been paralyzed after an injury sustained in a fire. He invented a jazz style called "hot" jazz, and his influence is noted by numerous artists, including: Lindsey Buckingham, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Carlos Santana, Pete Townshend, Mark Knopfler, Les Paul, Bill Nelson and B.B. King all put him into the top 10 most influential guitarists of all time.

Me, I'm not the biggest jazz guitar fan in the world, so I don't own much of his music. I just very much appreciate what he represents, and would love to have seen him play.

I could also ammend my choices of guitarists to substitute Pete Townshend, Buckingham or Knopfler and they would all be fine.

The plane carrying the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd went down. Bummer of a day. I was in a garage band, and we did party gigs, some dive tavern work. We were pretty much into southern rock, and Skynyrd was an influence. I had just bought the Street Survivors LP the first day it was out, which was 3 days before the crash. Skynyrd had their issues prior to that LP, and they all supposedly had got clean. Street Survivors was probably one of the tightest piece's of music Skynyrd ever played, much better musically than anything to that date.

I walked down the road to a buddys house, and he said ' Dude did you hear about Skynyrd?" About 5 of us in our band took a couple cases of beer down to the creek, sat there and drank beer and smoked weed for a couple of hours. Walked back to the barn, called a few people, and then started jamming Skynyrd covers for about the next 6 hours. In 2 hours, there was about 150 people there, nothing but muscle cars and Harleys in the barn yard. Went on until we all started dropping.

The term " The Day the Music died" was supposed to originate with Richie Vallens and Buddy Holly and The Big Booper all bought it in that plane crash. But I think it applies to every situation where you lose a great talent. Not different today in my way of thinking.

I remember reading about Skynyrd in the newspaper. Sadly, I got into them much more after the plane crash than before. Of course, I lived in their hometown for 3 1/2 years as an adult, so that had a little something to do with it.

SRV's helicopter crashed on my second day of law school classes, if memory serves. A classmate told me about it. I was dumbfounded.

And I have to confess a bit of surprise at the amount of love that Alvin Lee is getting around here. I would've thought that "tax the rich, feed the poor" wasn't exactly the most popular sentiment around these parts.

I am not happy with Alvin Lee's passing. That really sucks.

We can (and do) argue all the time about who the best guitarist is/was, and there will never be consensus. What each of us CAN state without argument from anyone is who each of us enjoys listening to, irrespective of how they may stack up talent-wise with their peers. For me, there was no guitarist I enjoyed listening to more than Alvin Lee. Just love the sound, feel, and soul of what he produced, especially during his years with TYA. Had the good fortune to see him three times in concert, and he was simply a monster when it came to lighning-quick blues/jazz-influenced rock guitar playing.

Rather than naming a street after him or erecting a statue in his honor, the tribute I propose for him is to convert and add his name to the lexicon as an adverb, with inclusion in Webster's and the OED, to describe guitar virtuosity. For instance, a prodigy who shows remarkable talent wielding the six-string would be described as being able to play the guitar very alvinly.
