First off, liberals don't have a problem with religion per se. They only have a problem with it when it's used to create laws (see Establishment Clause, written by known liberal Thomas Jefferson )
Secondly, marriage isn't just a religious event. It's also a legal contract that has legal implications on whether one is entitled to some privileges.
Lastly, what you're suggesting for a solution to the situation is known as "separate but equal." SCOTUS is already on record as viewing separate rarely equating an equal outcome. The only way that solution would work is to eliminate the legal recognition of religious marriages & make all unions civil. Good luck getting the holy rollers to go for that.
