I've never coached. Never played organized hardball, but it seems to me that at some point you do teach a a kid how to "wear one". The problem with "don't worry, he'll duck instinctively" means he might duck into a shoulder high fastball. Better to learn to turn and take one in the back.

But comparing throwing a baseball to teach a skill with throwing a basketball at one's dome to get his attention is bullshit. Ever catch a basketball in the face? It hurts. It is much harder and heavier than a dodgeball which is made for that purpose. What would he have done if one of those balls struck a kid in the shnoze and gave him a hockey nose?

I’m not reading all this bullshit, but I think this goes to Mace’s point (honestly, I lost track), but every year I played Pony ball, we had to teach one kid not to turn into the pitch and catch it in his chest. It was usually the kid with an emasculated father who didn’t know how to throw a baseball. Anytime a pitch would come near him he would turn and try to chest fuck it into the ground. That stopped once I moved on to Fed ball.

But yes, there was practice time spent at least once at the beginning of every year with tennis balls that taught kids how to turn away from a pitch inside.

I am likely in the minority on this one but I'm guessing the ball-throwing tantrums had less to do with Rice's firing than the homophobic and verbal abuse he hurled at his players.

How about the suicide of Tyler Clementi?

Those 2 incidents alone have made Rutgers more sensitive to this kind of behavior. Coaching style aside, there was no way they could only give this guy a 3 game suspension based on their recent history.

Probably. My guess is that you also played some kind of baseball year round. Even if it was pepper, BP, or just catch, holding a ball became second nature. These kids were from families who either didn’t have a father or the father had no idea what baseball was but figured that junior needed to be in a team activity. The area I lived didn’t see a Fed ball explosion until around 1991 or 1992. So each year, you would get at least one kid who was playing baseball for the first time who had no idea what he was doing. He was the kid who you had to teach him to step with the glove foot when throwing, put your hand next to your glove and not at the end with elbows out, and turn your back to the ball when it was coming at you because you were either getting hit in the helmet, back or butt instead of face, chest or nuts.

As an aside, one of the nastiest injuries I saw in person was when a kid guessed curve ball but got a fastball high and tight. He had started his stride and opened his hips and caught it almost flush on the mouth. We were only about 14, but a 14 year old fastball on a 14 year old face still produces a lot of blood and a few loose teeth.

My Little League teams were the best in our region. We won our league both years I was there and our All Star team was one game away from representing our district in the State tournament. My Babe Ruth teams won our league both years, though I don't recall there being any All Star tournaments following the season. My high school team was one out away from playing for the CIF championship my sophomore year, and we won our league every year. We were the top ranked team in the nation the year after I graduated, when Jack McDowell was the star pitcher. My American Legion teams? Hell, I have no idea. I don't even recall whether they kept W-L records. Same with the summer leagues and semi-pro stuff. My college team was good, but not USC/Arizona St good.

At no point during any of those stops were we ever given instruction on how to turn away when getting drilled. No tennis ball drills, no pitching machine drills, no verbal coaching, etc. Nothing. The subject simply never came up. Whenever someone got hit, well, they got hit. I never saw anyone fail to try and turn away once he realized he might get plunked, except for those few occasions when the guy was intentionally trying to lean into one to get a freebie.

But that window Toejam played in was the wild fucking west, where players got cut, ten year olds had to get on the juice to survive and there were enough recruiting violations to give USC the death penalty.
