Thinking about somebody taking pictures with an old 35 mm SLR and then looking at the slides backwards is enough to give me a huge woodie and imagine abusing the 16 y.o. goth chick living across the street.

the reverse lettering does suggest it was from a film negative, but, not necessarily a slide. If I remember my ancient photo media trivia, wasn't slide film different from regular photo film.

It's pretty much motion picture film, Kodak still makes it for cameras. If you've got a picture you'd like to print in a newspaper or leaflets, it gives you a sharper image. The photographer probably intended that trainwreck shot for the paper.
