Sherlock on netflix streaming
i had heard good things about this UK series despite my own trepidation about getting very excited about *yet another* remake of Doyle....and the Brits are unshy to remake everything under the sun ad nauseum (Bronte, Jane Austen, etc). has Martin Freeman from the Office and now the Hobbit. so, saw it on streaming and took a shot....trying to wean myself off the TV and a weekend plus of BTPCF.
i really enjoyed the first epi....i think there are two seasons of 3 1 1/2 hour epis. worth a shot imo. a little campy but clever. better than the movie of a couple years ago which was a bit disappointing i thought. i sorta like Guy RItchie, too.

I really like this series - have they released more than 3 episodes?

no, i thought the second batch of 3 was out since it was listed on IMDB when i posted....but, a little more searching showed it's only now just started filming. yeah, i thought it was pretty good.PSUFAN wrote:I really like this series - have they released more than 3 episodes?

i did watch that on streaming, season 1 at least. reminded me of Renoir's Rules of the Game and more recently Gosford Park. same upstairs/downstairs social class tensions. liked it, thanks for the rec. i'm not a huge costume drama guy per se, but i liked it.PSUFAN wrote:Did you watch Downton Abbey? if not, check it out - well done.

I'm avoiding it for that very reason. When my head is empty and I'm looking for something to find, the British Film Directory is a brillant resource for ideas. The site is slightly less sophisticated than it was :( but it's still good for seeing what's out thereKing Crimson wrote:i had heard good things about this UK series despite my own trepidation about getting very excited about *yet another* remake of Doyle.

I must confess to a indulging in a severe retrospective of Up/Down and I, Claudius during my board exile. Maybe that contributed a little bit to why I was away?
Up/Down is the best. I watched the entire series in about a month. And I don't think I've so avidly wanted to spend time watching a TV drama show. Such an enjoyable show to see after coming home from work. I still occasionaly need an episode. Matter of fact I believe I'm on my third walk through of the entire series. And I only began watching it in late October.
And I, Claudius is a must. I was lucky to have read the book several times before seeing the show. So that way I could focus more on the acting. Sian Phillips is tremendous, but I'd have to say that John Hurt wins the crown. Brian Blessed and Derek Jacobi are also great. Everyone deserves praise in this series. And for those who haven't seen it, I would suggest to read the book first because it does get to be a little tough to follow without someting of a roadmap for first time veiwers, unless you can just find interest in the acting performances alone. {which many undoubtedly do}
Just love watching Brit TV and cinema. It's sort of like how I neglected listening to C&W until later in life- a whole new genre to appreciate.

big fan of I, Claudius. i remember watching a couple epis with my dad when i was a kid....and being really confused. and some titties, which i liked. i don't think he watched it all or anything....but, later in life i checked the VHS out of the Boulder Public Library and loved it. maybe mid 90's. rewatched maybe 5 years ago. still top notch.
i saw Brian Blessed in something not so long ago and was thrilled. he was great.

Speaking of titties, the Up/Down season 5 episode entitled "Alberto" isn't to be missed. Lesley Anne Down as Georgina plays a role in a silent film and dresses as a courtesan, wearing a black skirt that shows her thighs, black hose, black stillettos, and shear white blouse that reveal her perfect perky breast and nipples.King Crimson wrote:big fan of I, Claudius. i remember watching a couple epis with my dad when i was a kid....and being really confused. and some titties, which i liked. i don't think he watched it all or anything....but, later in life i checked the VHS out of the Boulder Public Library and loved it. maybe mid 90's. rewatched maybe 5 years ago. still top notch.

She is hypnotic dressed like this. She would snag John's by the boatload if she were a policewoman playing the bait in one of those prostitution trolling jobs that the cops occasionaly conduct. Some might even make further inquiries to her after they'd been booked.

Re: Sherlock on netflix streaming
season 1 is a little hard to watch, but 2,3, and 4 are colossal...really outstanding...though the laugh-track is hard to bear. Hugh Laurie is amazing in 3 and 4. there a couple hour long type things, black adder back and forth for example, that aren't really worth it so much.mvscal wrote:Blackadder?
big fan of black adder, though.
and those have been available pretty regular like on netflix streaming.

i looked for it on youtube....but it's not there. lemme see what i can do. Mitchell and Webb look (which is not as good as peep show....but pretty good mostly)....has been on/off again on netflix streaming.Martyred wrote:King Crimson wrote:have you seen the That Mitchell and Webb Look almost end of episode "tribute" of sorts to Season 4?Martyred wrote:Season 4 should have been funnier...

like i say, it's quite touching...the homage. it's casual and off-handed a bit....but real. in a short moment, they acknowledge the real "politics" and social class issues that are all in blackadder....the foppery of the aristocrats, real human costs of war etc.

Baldrick may have been comic relief, but the Lord Percy Percy character was a riot!
