never heard it, but I remember a friend of mine recommending that album/disc.....may have to see if I can pick it up.....

somehow, a George Strait disc (Blue Clear Sky) worked it's way into the rotation this week......

They started as The Sidewinders and became the Sand Rubies. A rock solid band out of Tucson. Often confused in the early days with the Gin Blossoms, though the Sidewinders rocked harder. Songs are hooky and have a permeable southwest vibe. They have a new packaging of "Mas Cuaca" out now.

Felix, check them out as Sidewinders first, then Sand Rubies. It's Rich Hopkins all the way, and the Rubies reflect his changes.

There are really only two. "Auntie Ramos; Pool Hall" and "Witch Doctor" Both are excellent. There is also a Sidewinders/Sand Rubies compilation disc that you can get through Amazon or other sources. This disc contains most of the Sidewinders songs plus most of the Sand Rubies titles. You can't miss with any of them.

How much did you end up paying for it Sam? That is the only group release I haven't heard. I can't believe I omitted "Cuacha", the first release. I would still start with "Pool Hall" or "Witchdoctor". Even saying that, you have to give that first Sand Rubies disc a listen. "Guns in the Churchyard" is a great song that is a nice departure from the harder, faster riffs.

He got some big exposure in 2011, with a Grammy, Academy Award, Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Award (along with T Bone Burnett) for the theme song from Crazy Heart. I guess he's had some earlier critical acclaim for his first couple of albums but, being pretty much out of the loop, I had not heard of him.

Country, blues, American roots influences. Gravelly voice, good songwriting skills, excellent band. It's the kind of music that, while maybe not easy listening background music, really grows on you as you listen. Definitely looking forward to hearing the live performance.

Sam, Was (Not Was) released about 4 or 5 discs of their own material, but "What Up Dog?" was by far their best effort. Nearly every song on it could have been, and should have been a hit single. There were of couple of strange tracks on it that were spoken word over instrumentation, that came off as odd-ball comedy drops, but the rest of the disc was gold. Soul, funk and pop all mixed together. There were two "hits" with "Walk the Dinosaur", a novelty that gained popularity due to MTV, and "Spy in the House of Love", a solid dance number. Marshall Crenshaw and Elvis Costello helped pen a couple of other songs, and Frank Sinatra Jr. lends vocals to "Wedding Vows in Vegas", arguably the best song on the record.

You can find a copy for just a couple of bucks, well worth the investment.

saw them twice in concert and put on a really good show....I agree that Paul Rogers is one of the more underappreciated vocalists in rock.....I think the reason he was underappreciated is because there were so many phenomenal vocalists at the time Bad Company was peaking as a band.....

I remember seeing him fronting Queen on some PBS show a couple of years back.....while he's no Freddie Mercury, I thought his vocals meshed very well with Queen's style of music.....it was a really good show

Just go through Amazon for it Felix. Most record stores can order it for you too, if you have any in your area. Thier discs are all easily available, except for the one Sam picked up. And like Sam, I can get it for you too, if you want to go that route.

Oh most assuredly, those go into rotation all the time for me. This week, I just was in the mood for those particular two. I would imagine Sam would express a similar opinion, but like him, those are my favorites. "Argus" is a gem, a true classic, and I get why Sam has it as one of his "island" albums. It wouldn't be in my list, but it is fantastic. While "Sequencer" doesn't fit into the rock genre, this album by Larry Fast is beautiful synth work, especially the cut "Chateau" and his cover of "Classical Gas" is very, very nice.
