I know there are some (good?) youth sport coaches on the board.

Weigh in on this.

Anything more than a 5 TD romp can result in a coach being fined
and/or suspended.

If they are constantly getting beat, who wants to play anymore? We
lose kids all season long because of that.

On that basis, I'm surprised there's anyone left on the Raiders' roster.

For many reasons, I never officiated youth football. Last Saturday I attended a game in Vestal NY where my 10 year old grandson played. They played 12 minute quarters. What moron has little kids out there for that long, most playing both ways due to such small rosters? I kept my mouth shut. Mercy rules are a good idea, but should involve a running clock and game termination if the score exceeds a certain point differential.

Not sure how good an idea mercy rules are, but where they exist, I agree that once the point differential is reached, the game ends. Punishing a team for doing what they're supposed to do is no way to enforce the rule. My grandsons play in a youth football league that has a mercy rule, and unfortunately, their team is gonna end up on the mercy end of the rule often this year - they suck out loud. Kinda sad to hear them after the game is over wishing the other team had scored again so they could have gotten a mercy win.

Nonsense. Only a couple of those 13 NFL Championships have come in the last 20 years.

FHSAA (Florida high School Athletic Association) current rules:

In Florida high school baseball and softball, the game ends if a team is ahead by 10 runs or more after 5 innings (4 1/2 for the home team). Also, the game ends if a team is ahead by 15 runs after three innings (2 1/2 for the home team). Mercy rules for other Florida high school sports:
Football: Optional running clock can if a team is ahead by 35 points or more at halftime, mandatory after three quarters.
Basketball: After halftime, mandatory running clock once a team takes a 35-point lead.
Soccer: Game ends if a team is ahead by eight goals at halftime or any point in the second half.
Flag football: Game ends if a team is ahead by 19 points with two minutes to go in the second half.
Water polo: After third period or during fourth, mandatory running clock if a team has a 10-goal lead.
Boys lacrosse: Mandatory running clock once a team takes a 12-goal lead. If differential becomes less than 12, normal play resumes.
Girls lacrosse: Same rule as boys, with 10-goal differential.

I still umpire softball and love the 15 run rule. There are only a few schools here that have any talent. When they play the others, it is typically a couple innings of BP for them. When you get two crappy teams, pack a lunch.

I think it should be up to the coach. And a stand up coach isn't going to run up the score. I realize there are plenty of asshole coaches out there that have no problem doing that.

In college football, so I'm told, there is an unwritten rule about this. If your team is getting killed, you must face it and put in your scrubs. The winning team should follow suit. Coaches that leave in the starters in that situation are tagged for future retribution. I worked a high school game years ago in Syracuse when Dorsey Levens played. He scored like 4 times in the first quarter. He didn't get a touch for the rest of the game.

Watching a kid toy with the defense and rip off a 20 yard run then pull up and half-ass it to the sideline looks sadder and more disrespectful to the opponent than actually trying. You should always want the opponent's best shot and if you get pummeled, so be it. Then again, we're talking about kids and kids are pussies.

Did you ever play football? I made the U of Maine team as a walk on. I wasn't very good, but I do know it requires a lot of effort. I had the utmost respect as an official for the kids who practiced every day, played, and tried hard even though they were on the short end of the score. Some of the best games I worked were cross over games at the end of the season, featuring teams that were 0-9 who got a chance to play each other when the better teams went on to the play-offs and the Dome. I also worked around 25 play-off and inter-sectional games in the Carrier Dome during my 32 years in CNY.

Yeah, most of the young ones don't give a shit what happens.
They're just puttin' their 3 hours in because mom and dad said so -- and then it'll all be a blur because they're back in their comfort zone in front of the Xbox.

I agree, it's more disrespectful for the dominator to pull up.

B-Ball team is up 54-9 in the 3rd qtr. -- dominator steals the ball and takes it down for his 15th uncontested layup of the game, and he does this...

You know what?

I played (and coached) youth tennis -- and there is absolutely NO mercy rule at all.
I have never heard of it being implemented in youth tennis.

- If the superior physical specimen is up 6-0, 3-0 and he still wants to crack his serves at 90 mph past his hapless foe, so it is.
- If he decides he wants to dial it down and show "mercy" for his opponent, so it is.
- If he (perhaps being a baseliner) decides at 6-0, 3-0, he will take the opportunity to practice a little serve and volley -- just using his opponent as a sparing partner, so it is.

I've been on both ends of all three of these scenarios.

It's entirely up to the dominator how he wants to handle his business.

No, dumbass, tennis has built in mercy. It is called its scoring system. You play until you reach a score and then it is over. Most every other sport has a time basis or in the case of baseball, innings. There is only one situation in tennis where you play to a higher score, its called tiebreakers, not really applicable here. If I play Federer tomorrow, he is gonna win 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, the same score he would have against you, anyone else on this board or 99.999% of the rest of the planet. He will not win a set 12-0 because there is a built in mercy rule.

It's an interesting perspective.

I would argue that by the same token, football and basketball have a built in mercy rule.

It's called... THE CLOCK, and it will run out.

In youth tennis, especially in early round matches, a lot of kids get the shit kicked out of them, are toyed with, and humiliated.
Any spectator who wanders by to watch a few minutes of the action can eyeball a total mismatch easily.
In most of the cases like this, the match is obviously over from 3-0 in the first set.
It's just batting practice for basically the entire match.

But nobody steps in to stop the action, because poor little Timmy's self of steam is taking a battering.
No, he has to stay out there, sack up, take his lumps, and go the distance.

The issue here for those who are too butthurt to accept that beatings are part of sports, is the dreadfully painful SCOREBOARD.
It just hurts too much to look at it.
35-0 is acceptable to the self of steam, but 57-0 isn't. lol

I find that funny.

Get over it.
The clock's going to run out.
You got your ass kicked all around no matter what the numbers on the scoreboard say, and anyone who watched it knows it.
And the dominator hopscotching out of bounds -- instead of taking it in for the 7th TD is only more of an insult.

Also, as Scott and trev noted, coaches know how to deal with beatings in a dignified manner.
And those coaches who don't... well, people can judge them as assholes or however else they want.

... or not.

Wrong. Kids have parents who are pussies. Kids didn't create soccer leagues where they don't keep score and everyone get a trophy. Kids have parents who make excuses for them instead of holding them accountable.

You don't see the difference?

Let's say tomorrow we field the T1B deers and play ANY NFL team. Yeah, there is a clock, but, the score is gonna read something triple digits to zero. The actual NFLteam will score on every play. It will be seriously ugly. if we play tennis, we lose 6-0 all three sets, which is something that actually happens even in pro mismatches. You can't win a set 194-0 simply because it ends at 6. This is pretty much a mercy rule.

The only difference is that you are hung up on what the scoreboard says.

To me, an ass-kicking is an ass-kicking -- and my eyes can recognize it.
I don't need to see a gaudy scoreboard to make it true for me.

Example:

The Raiders and Chiefs have played many times, and Oakland has won it's share.
They've piled up pts on KC before.
But probably THE greatest ass-kicking I have ever seen the Raiders deliver to KC was a mere 24-0 game in December of 2002.

It was played in the rain and Oakland simply dominated the line of scrimmage all day long, got up 14-0 in the 2nd quarter, and just kept plodding away.
The Griefs could not do anything to stop Oakland from running.
The Raiders piled up 280 yds rushing and just kept grinding out first down after first down.

They did not jack up the scoreboard, but they beat the shit out of KC that day.
Anyone who watched the game knew it - and nobody needed to see a 52-0 scoreboard to have it verified.

The fukking scoreboard. They are not based on how dominant the better team is or how many fukking first downs they made.

Nice KYOA, tart.

Of course the mercy rules are based on the scoreboard.

I openly acknowledge it.

I think it's silly.

Perhaps baseball can use a mercy rule, but basketball and football?
No, I think trev is right.
It should be up to the coaches to handle their teams.

Football and basketball have a clock... which will expire.

That's the mercy.

Coaches that leave in the starters in that situation are tagged for future retribution. I worked a high school game years ago in Syracuse when Dorsey Levens played. He scored like 4 times in the first quarter. He didn't get a touch for the rest of the game.
I was just talking with my hometown's varsity coach a couple of weeks ago. He's was steamed because after his squad was up 33-0 in the 3rd, he started to yank his starters. The other team's coach kept his 1st team in and scored 3 TDs over about 12 minutes of play. So our coach put his 1st team D back in for the duration, shut them down cold and won the game 39-19. The other team's Schmick errr coach never yanked his starters. I guess some folks just don't have any class.

What I love about unwritten rules is that the only ones who seem to know about them are the ones who cite them, and they never cite them as something THEY were following, but rather as something SOMEONE ELSE was breaking. Of course, the parties who are accused of breaking them always claim ignorance about their existence.

Alls I knows is Carlos Gomez took unwritten rule breaking to a new level last week.
