A pretty good rule in deer country is to not ride around dusk and dawn when those fukkers are most active. Some dude on a bike died around here about a week ago hitting one.

This is the text of a e mail a friend sent about 3 days ago, and this dude is about 62, so should know better.

Just a quick note…on August 20th at around 7pm I got my first out-of-season DOE….hit her with my Kawasaki 600 at about 60 mph. Totaled the bike, killed her instantly and took out almost my whole left side…broke my scapula, clavicle into 6 pieces (7 screws and a plate & 15 staples), most left ribs, left tibia in a couple spots(7 2.25 inch screws and 19 staples) and the left fibula in half (6 screws & a plate & 15 staples), ground down the right knee nearly to the bone, left forearm to the nerves/muscle and right elbow & left knee badly rashed. 5 days in hospital…bed rest 5 weeks,,,,walking again around Thanksgiving.

Sounds like a whole lot of fun.

in the east deer size is pretty much in proportion to latitude. Maine has 250 lb white tails, Tennessee has 120 lb white tails. You would think that with a better food source in the winter, it would be the other way around, but, I think chuckie D has a hand in it. Scrawny deer just can't make it through a Maine winter. In the west there may be other factors such as predators. More Mountain Lions, Wolves etc.... to take care of the little ones.

Round these parts, if you hit an elk, the passengers in the vehicle die. Pretty important to not speed at dawn/dusk on twisty roads in the Coast Range this time of year.

A 1000 pound animal against a 3000 pound vehicle traveling at 55MPH creates an issue with physics.

Coming home from fishing years ago, a huge herd crossed the road in front of us, causing the anchor to drop in the truck. Except the alpha-dog elk decided he'd stay in the road. My very funny drunken idiot tough guy buddy decided he'd get out and clear the road for us... hilarity ensued. Got even funnier when I locked the truck door on him. Those fuckers don't fear much. And they don't mind chasing idiots around.

We actually don't have mulies in this part (the northwest part) of the state. Every other part of the state does. Don't have whitetail, either. We have blacktails by the buhzillions, some of which get decent size (200# is pretty big), and you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Roosevelt (which get fucking huge, 1100#+).

Sam, yes it would. But since the rut coincides with the onset of the rainy season, you probably wouldn't be riding around the Coast Range on a bike (although plenty of people do). They're usually way up the mountains, out of sight during the dry season.
