F-22 Taunts Iranian Jets

I don't know about the veracity of this story -- but I just simply approve of anyone being taunted.

Only good things can happen ---> as far as provoking some sort of incident which will prompt a 9 page thread where Dinsdale can learn us all some things.

What is much more likely to have happened than a Top Gun style encounter was the F-22's got close enough to see what was carried below the wings with binoculars. Then the climbed up and behind the F-4's, closing to within 5-10 miles and then got bright, ie flipped on the transponder, turned on the tracking radar, and started speaking to the AWACS. This would cause the F-4 to suddenly start screaming at the RIO and Pilot that a threat was suddenly behind them.

Don't forget that the F-4 is 50's tech. Hell, the pilots in the F-22 might have had grandfathers that flew the F-4.

If they need to escort the drone with F-22s why don't they just use the F-22s for surveillance and leave the drone at home?
I'm sure you could stick a camera on there somewhere.

It isn't like 1 F-22 is covering 1 drone. A pair of F-22s can cover multiple drones over a wide area plus other air assets in the area. F-22s could cover AWACS, drones, shipping, and even CAP duty all at once. The rag heads couldn't hassle each of those at the same time, without getting their whole AF airborne at the same time.

Yeah, you want to sneak up on them instead of shooting from a standoff position 60 to 100 miles away. Just makes more sense to risk the assets to do that instead of the effective way.

Goat fuckers in F-4s, which is a 50 year old airframe, against the most advanced jet fighter in years are not going to cause much concern. The F 22 is likely the last fighter platform to be built until they go all Hans Solo with the interglactic fighters.

The F-4 is a bad ass platform, my neighbor flew one in Nam, and the upgrades have made it a very effective offensive aircraft for a lot of third world shit holes.

Military jets have never really cared about noise, but I will venture that the F -22 is way quieter than a F -4 even with upgraded power plants.

Granted that an F-4 is ancient, but how did they acquire them in the first place? It's still a badass fighter jet. A pawn shop in Mecca? I can see Russia donating some old MiG's but surely we didn't sell Iran F-4's.

If the camel jockeys are in a fighter then the noise makes no difference. With a headset on, wind noise and their own engines turning they have no shot to hear the F-22.

Same for anyone on the ground. Just take the F-22 to just below Mach 1 and they will be overhead before you hear them.

Big problem with the 50 is it is only stealthy from the front and without external ammunition. If the 50 makes a turn it is suddenly screaming its location. Plus because of its size and lack of overall stealth, it will be less manoverable than the QE2. Does it have it's roll? Sure, but it is extremely limited and on a good news front may see the Air Force go more quickly to Space based battlefield monitoring vs traditional AWACS.

We should be ten steps ahead of them at all times. The current testing of some of the "X" craft shows we are probably taking control of near space. This is good since our old communications systems
are likely vulnerable. If we can send up new ones on short notice and even move their orbits, it should give us the upper hand there.
I hope that we are also advancing in surface and undersea naval technology. We should be second to no one there too.
Just keep your fingers crossed that there is no counterpart to Gen. Ripper in China or Russia.

Most pilots understand English. This is the common language of aviation. If one dude speaks Farsi and the other Chinese then they communicate in English.

Always remembered the beginning of a PBS-TV show about the English language. The opening scene was an Italian commercial airliner making a landing at the Paris airport and the communication between pilot and control tower was in English. I guess the only place where it was not universal was the old Soviet Union. Not sure about modern Russia or any of the old SSR's. English is also basic for most technical writing.

Drones don't fly all that fast Mikey.

It was a simple show of force if this incident is true. The F-22 may have checked out what the F-4 had from the Book of Armament and then checked up to say "Hi." It can out accelerate the F-4 in a few seconds anyway. I also know where they operate from the Aluetian Islands off Alaska. When I flew out there we always have a USAF Raven watching over us and the former F-15's from that base were always on alert if we got intercepted off the former Soviet coast.

It happens all of the time with Navy intercepts. I've seen cockpit video of an F-14 from back in the day locked on a Russian Bear aircraft. Dude kept acquiring all of the heat sources from the engines with missile lock as the Tomcat was on its 6.

No one suggested attacking Iran. This was a discussion about the F-4, F-22 and drones. It has wavered slightly but is still pretty much on its original heading, nowhere near attacking Iran. The F-14, F/A-18, F-4, F-22, SR-71, etc. are all very loud in the terminal environment. Kinda hard to hear the noise of those engines at altitude and speed. BTW, see your hovel in the SFO area in that video I've posted?
