Hendrix on PBS last night

Post by Goober McTuber »

DVR'ed it. Looking forward to watching it.
Hard to believe, but in the four decades since Jimi Hendrix died, no one has made a great documentary about him. Jimi Hendrix: Hear My Train a Comin' on American Masters fixes that problem (Tuesday, 8 p.m., PBS). It capably tells the story of Jimi's rise from impoverished Seattle youth to rock star to drug casualty — an extraordinary journey of just 27 years.

The film is a treasure trove of rare photos, previously unseen concert footage, intimate letters and revealing home movies. Hendrix's friends and colleagues (including a star-struck Paul McCartney) describe a shy young man who utterly transformed when he walked onstage with an electric guitar. Indeed, it's hard to connect the quiet Jimi in archival interviews with the strutting psychedelic god who slashes through "Purple Haze" and "Foxy Lady." None of the commentators can adequately explain the power of his music, whose mix of the earthy and the ethereal still raises hairs on the back of your neck.

I can't explain it either. Stop reading this review and just watch Hendrix in action on Tuesday night.

This production is just rehashed footage, nothing new, along with a good deal of damage control. It leaves out many interesting facts about Jimi, such as his being given a choice by the Seattle police to join the military or go to jail (he was caught as a passenger in a stolen car). The fact of Jimi's unusual physiognomy--his disproportionately large hands and head--could have been examined and understood in light of his brother who was extremely deformed. Also the fact of LSD as a primary agent of his musical development was ignored. But the worst omission was the character of Mike Jeffries, the gangster manager who ruthlessly exploited Jimi, and very probably murdered him. Instead, at the end of the documentary, we actually see some broad who was a "secretary of Mike Jeffries Productions" giving a perfunctory dismissal--"Jimi didn't know what was going on"--or some bullshit. In fact, Jimi was in the process of breaking off his contract with Jeffries (who was subsequently murdered himself in mysterious fashion). All in all, a light and limited look at a cool cat.

Well, if you're referring to the Mossad poisoning Arafat--and I know you are--well you're on to something. They used the preferred Russian style poison so as to confuse the belated investigation. Their clear purpose was to bring Hamas to power, and thus a "terrorist' regime with whom they regrettably could make no progress whatsoever. Typical ruthless machinations by the utterly criminal apartheid state.

If you look closely, you can see a bulbous object on the underside of Jimi's guitar.

No, D, but I'll tell you who was seriously cock-gazing--and that was J. Edgar Hoover in the mid-1930's. And in particular he was gazing at the photos sent to him by Meyer Lansky which clearly showed the Director being plowed (for he was a dominant bottom) by his longtime partner, Clive Tolson. The image of the penis itself and his own grunting painful pleasure so evident in the photo (a copy, as indicated) caused Hoover to capitulate to the blackmail and so embark on a prolonged campaign of official denial of the very existence of an organized crime syndicate in America for a few decades, allowing the Mafia a window of unchecked growth unprecedented (and unrivaled until the repeal of Glass-Steagall). Gazin' indeed.

So...what's the best Jimi song? Best cut?

Pretty cool shred approach to the Haze, though I personally find something missing in the steady pyrotechnic hammers and dives. That is, the tone is a bit too consistent and lacking the intense organic clarity of Jimi's touch. Like Van Halen or similar tedious frauds, this player can't really get in touch with the solo or the blues beneath. but I like the backing track, where's you get it?

LTS, don't know if it is his best track, but my favorite has always been "All Along the Watchtower". The 'turnaround' at the beginning was so challenging, that Dave Mason, who played acoustic guitar, had to go through over 30 takes just to get it right. Adding that Bob Dylan was so impressed with the adaptation that Hendrix did on his song, that he essentially bequeathed it to him as his own.

Makes me want to give Mason's version another listen. Did not see the TV show. If it was so much of a rehash, makes me wonder if there is more "missing" material out there somewhere.

Wolfman, Mason's own version is quite good, especially on his "Certified Live" double LP. But I was referring to his playing on the Hendrix track, where he not only played acoustic guitar, but also bass. Since he and Hendrix were at the party where Dylan debuted the cut and they both took to it immediately, Hendrix had invited Mason to play on his album for the cut. Mason has since said it was an absolute bear to play it the way Hendrix wanted him to, but in the end, he managed to get it down. Listen to it carefully, and you can hear just how challenging that guitar work is.

Nah, I already knew about the acid. That's why he had those scarves tied around his arms. You should tie one around your fat neck.

goobs, what's your silly take on Jimi's scarves?

Nice playing, Willers. Despite the slight limitations of the tone you do a good job jumping right on the groove, melody and vamp. Put up a blues and I'll be really impressed.

Actually I don't care if her name was Rapunzel. I'm happy for Jimi that he got lots of poontang in his brief career ("like picking cherries from a tree" he once said). I wonder if he left any weird looking kids about.

Pretty cool. Good tone. I love those backing tracks--where do you get them? Even though Bad Sign is certainly a blues, it 's one of those one-chord vamp solos--which of course are thus tougher in some ways to take flight. Try a standard 12-bar, I'm sure you can do lots with it.
