Mack stepping down
Rumors are that Texas already have their guy lined up and will be announced within days. Why blow out Mack unless you have a top tier coach on board? Could Saban really be making the move?

And he won them their first NC in 35 years. Pretty good outcome for them.
The same Mack Brown that had North Carolina ranked and playing with elite teams. Say all you want about him, but he was a damn good coach.

Mack will step down no later than Friday.
Rumors say new coach is all but a done deal but won't be announced until the new coach's team is done with its bowl game. It will also allow Mack a farewell tour thru the remainder of December.
Brown will receive his buyout of $2.75 million and will then be moved to a "figure head" position within the Univ with an annual salary of $500,000 per.

Now Mack is saying he isn't stepping down.

Remember, Dodds wasn't retiring until he actually was about 10 days later.
Texas wants to keep its info close to the vest. They dislike others breaking their news. Further, Mack is out recruiting right now. If he doesn't deny the story then it is all but an admission that he is leaving.

Re: Mack stepping down
New contracts in no way prevent a coach from leaving. Just because a few were extended over the weekend doesn't mean the school or the coach can't get out of the contract today. All of the contracts have this little thing called a buyout. Either side can void the contract by paying the other side the amount of the buyout.
As an example Mack's buyout is $2.75. Yes he is under contract thru 2020 at an average just under $6 million per, but that $42 million isn't guaranteed.
All the coaches listed above also have buyouts, some higher, some lower.

Let me add a little more smoke to this. Granted no fire yet, but you know the old saying.Killian wrote:Rumors are that Texas already have their guy lined up and will be announced within days. Why blow out Mack unless you have a top tier coach on board? Could Saban really be making the move?
So I figured I would search around and see if there were any flights recently from the cities of the top coaching prospects for Texas to Austin. I looked at ten separate cities and only one came back with a hit, ie a flight between the two since Sat.
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N323P
Tuscaloosa.
Now that alone wasn't enough for me so I looked into the registration for that aircraft. N323P is owned by Allease Inc. I searched the FAA registrations and found the corporation listed its address as 1550 Mcfarland Blvd in Tuscaloosa, AL. Turns out that is also the address of Bryant Bank. Yes, that Bryant. Clearly, Allease is a corporation that is pretty much paper only.
A quick call to a pilot buddy who lives in AL and I had a little more info on Allease inc. Turns out it is a group of private individuals that collectively share two aircraft. It also turns out that the Saban's are part of said group.
Again, this is all smoke, not conformation of fire. But this is certainly interesting.

If this is the Saban's flight over, I wonder if it is just her or both or him.
The Bama jet isn't available for public tracking. They block the tail number N1UA, so no way to tell if that one was in Austin as well.

i don't know why you leave Alabama for Texas. right now, Texas is all the same bullshit about high expectation unrealistic fan base with none of the good part....winning it all more than once since the Beatles broke up. Unless Saban is on some weird super legacy all time greatest ever ego trip. Texas is wanking hard as usual....
don't see why if i'm jimbo fisher i'm leaving FSU for UT either.
i like Mack mostly in not the weird hateful way that some OU fans do....but if he is truly gone and playing it up...he's only mindfucking kids and parents who trusted him at one point...and that's not cool.
he was only ever as good as his assistant hires but all the guy did was average about 10 wins a season for 15 years at Texas and at UNC before that.
Art Briles is the guy i'd have gone after....but apparently he has some anger towards UT.....as unthinkable as that is in the GSoT. which speaks to his character.

Re: Mack stepping down
So Saban loses to his archrival (and loses a chance at the MNC), is widely questioned about the coaching decisions he made for that game, and gets over a million dollar raise. Saban truly is a CEO.
Jimmy Sexton is a helluva agent. Teases Texas into jerking Mack Brown around, just to get himself a bigger paycheck from bama.

We're a freaking train wreck. Hard not to predict when you combine huge egos and huge cash with a healthy dose or two of pure unfiltered arrogance. Since Saban was a no go and Mack being vague about the future, everyone is certain that either John or Jim Harbaugh are coming, which is fine because Saban was an untrustworthy cock sucker any way ![Rolling Eyes :meds:](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)

Re: Mack stepping down
At 6:21 pm central time the Longhorn network is reporting that Mack is stepping down and will stay on to coach in the Alamo Bowl.
They report he told the players today after practice and at the same time sent an email to all the current recruits.
Radio reports confirm discussions with Saban have occured. They also are saying that Saban's contract extension only raised the buyout by $1 million, and that he is still very much in the mix.

Re: Mack stepping down
It's official.

http://www.texassports.com/news/2013/12 ... h=football
University of Texas Football Head Coach Mack Brown will step down from his position following the Longhorns appearance in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30, he announced Saturday.
Mack Brown:
"Sally and I were brought to Texas 16 years ago to pull together a football program that was divided. With a lot of passion, hard work and determination from the kids, coaches and staff, we did that. We built a strong football family, reached great heights and accomplished a lot, and for that, I thank everyone. It's been a wonderful ride. Now, the program is again being pulled in different directions, and I think the time is right for a change. I love The University of Texas, all of its supporters, the great fans and everyone that played and coached here. I can't thank DeLoss Dodds enough for bringing our family here, and Bill Powers and the administration for supporting us at a place where I have made lifelong friendships. It is the best coaching job and the premier football program in America. I sincerely want it to get back to the top and that's why I am stepping down after the bowl game. I hope with some new energy, we can get this thing rolling again."
Steve Patterson, Texas Men's Athletics Director:
"We appreciate everything Mack has done for The University of Texas. He's been a tremendous coach, mentor, leader and ambassador for our university and our student-athletes. He is truly a college football legend. I've had a number of talks with him recently, and he has always said he wanted what was best for The University of Texas. I know this decision weighed heavily on him, and today he told us he's ready to move forward."
William Powers Jr., University of Texas at Austin President:
"This is a very difficult day for everyone in The University of Texas family. Mack Brown is one of the best football coaches in the country, a tremendous representative of our University, and, most importantly, a great friend. He has produced championship teams with tremendous student-athletes and has always done so with the utmost class and integrity. Mack is just the best and he will be missed. With that said, I'm excited for the future and the opportunity to work with him in a new capacity for the years to come and am thrilled that he and Sally will remain part of our family. He is an unbelievable resource for us and will always be a valuable member of the Longhorn community."

Re: Mack stepping down
What facts do you have that prove Saban won't go to Austin?
I know what he said on Friday, but he has lied throughout his coaching career.
Further, signing an extension doesn't prevent him from going to Austin. All it did was up his buyout and make it more expensive for Texas to get him. Again a good move by his agent. If Texas really wants him the salary is no longer $8 million, but closer to $9 million. Good move by the agent.
Finally, there are multiple reports that put Saban in Austin early last week. If true that alone proves he lied about considering the job.
I only point these things out to say wait till it is all over Sam before you share your true thoughts. Still plenty of time for the above to come back and bite you in the ass.

I wouldn't say that. That money can buyout just about anybody they want. While I wouldn't complain if Saban took the job, that really isn't the direction I'd prefer to see them take. I'd rather they bring in a younger guy with Texas roots. Somebody like Chad Morris perhaps.Sudden Sam wrote:Friends in Austin told me Friday that it was a done deal...that Saban was a Longhorn.

and Gary Barnett is not god. he's a good football coach who won both the big ten and big xii, but he's better with 7-8 win talent not the racehorses you get at Texas.

Re: Mack stepping down
Saw a few clips of his comments yesterday and then some of the question and answer. Three pages of handwritten notes. Dude really spoke from the heart and he decided to step down to unify those around the Texas program.
One reporter asked him what he would change and he instantly responded with having Cole Pitman (sp?) alive today and preventing the Bonfire collapse.
Class guy till the end.
Dude may have been too loyal to his assistants at times, and given them too much decision making ability, but that just makes him a better person.
I have no idea who Texas is going to hire, but as I have always said, you don't fire a coach unless you know you are going to get better. There are examples in every program, but Texas needs to look no farther than when they fired Akers. They didn't like winning games 10-3 or 14-10 so they forced him out. Wonder how they enjoyed losing games 66-3 after that?

But Helfie is nothing if not classy and considerate, so I can't seeing him allowing his squad to drop more than 60 in Mack's swansong.

"Jim Mora has informed Texas that he's not interested in the Longhorn head coaching job, according to sources.
Texas and Mora's representatives were in contact and had discussions Thursday. The job wasn't formally offered to Mora, but it was discussed in a way that if Mora wanted it, the job was available.
The terms were not disclosed, but sources are indicated that the salary would have made Mora one of the top three highest-paid coaches in the country, provided a big pool for assistants salaries and greatly supported Mora's charitable endeavors.
Sources are indicating that Mora's bond with the UCLA team, the feeling that he's building something at UCLA and not wanting to uproot his family were big factors."

Usually when a coach "withdraws their name" or "declines an offer", it means they've already been told to get fucked but they have the option of publicly saving face.
Texas has probably narrowed it down to 2-3 people. My guess is Jon Gruden.
