Similar situations in many older cities of the Northeast. Syracuse underwent a further travesty when I-81 and I-690 were built, effectively dividing the city into quadrants. I don't recall any forced school busing, but I-81 in particular destroyed the 15th Ward, which was the black community, which at the time was actually more of a working class community. As the older ethnic enclaves of Polish, Irish, and Italians prospered, they left for the new suburbs. They were replaced by the displaced blacks and more recently southeast Asians and Latinos. Quite interesting social dynamics in a way.
