The Republicans are nearly as responsible for the hole the country is in as the Dims are.

I will say this for the Republicans, though -- generally speaking they seem to have a more genuine patriotism and realistic care and appreciation for the country.

Saddam did not surrender unconditionally. He did; however, agree to certain terms as part of the cease fire agreement he negotiated to save his ass. Among those terms he agreed to inventory and destroy all of his chemical weapons under our direct supervision.

He failed to comply with the inspections. Oddly enough, when you evade inspections people start to think you might be hiding something and they just might kick your ass to find out what it is you're hiding.

Only an idiot would conclude that we should have known that he had nothing when Saddam had spent the previous 12 years playing games with weapons inspectors. The conclusion that he was concealing a weapons program from investigators was the only logical inference from such behavior and every intelligence agency on the planet concurred.

Saddam was bluffing on a busted flush and finally got called. He could have come clean at any point in time and avoided the war and the noose which punctuated it for him but he didn't. It was just the last in a long series of hideous miscalculations on his part.
