A few questions

Post by Goober McTuber »

Hey there, poptart. Thank you all for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law.
However, I could use some advice from you all regarding some of the specific biblical laws and how to best follow them:

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price to ask for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried just asking, but most women take offense!

d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death! Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my eyesight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses on occasion...Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they be killed?

i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but can I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you all have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

You grew up in the Church and you don't know the answer(s)?

Jeremiah 31:31-33
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Deuteronomy 18:18-19
I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

Romans 10:4
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

John 5:24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Goober, all of your questions pertain to the covenant of The Law, which God gave to the Israelites.
It was a list of rules and actions the Israelites were bound to abide by.

But in the first Scripture I posted (Jeremiah), God promised that he would be making a new covenant -- and as it says that it would not be the same as the covenant He had given to the Israelites at that time.
The Law would be placed in the inward part of a man, his heart.

The second Scripture (Deuteronomy) spoke of The One who God would send -- The Christ.
The third and fourth Scriptures (Romans and John) verify Christ, and that He is the end of The Law which you cited.

The new covenant is in Christ -- and the Law, and everything else, is fulfilled in Him.

Because of their training in following The Law, the Jews had a mindset that they needed to do things, and show actions to God.
But Jesus came as the new covenant and was asked what someone needed to do to do the work of God, and this is the exchange...

John 6:28-29
Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Believe in Christ.
It's all finished in Him.

Actually, in that passage God says he will send a prophet. Could be Mohammed.

Jesus Christ was a Prophet.
He fulfilled all three offices of the Old Testament -- Prophet, Priest, King.

Prophet: Show the way to meet God
Priest: Forgives sin
King: Has all authority

It's not speaking of Muhammad.
Among many other things, Muhammad came from Ishmael
God promised that His covenant would be through Isaac. Genesis 17:21.
Muhammad came from among the enemies of the Israelites, not from among the brethren.

In your belief system. Or he may have only been a prophet.
