Need some Vegas Help...

Post by Left Seater »

So do I double down on...no not that kind of help. I will be spending a few days in Vegas trying to lock up a few new clients around an conference for private jet owners. I doubt I will spend so much as a penny on any gambling in Vegas. It just doesn't hold much appeal for me.

Since I haven't been there since I was in college I thought I would reach out to this board since a few of you are prolly degenerate gamblers and Vegas is your dream vacation.

I am staying at the Cosmopolitan, which looks too trendy for my taste but they had decent priced rooms. I need a few suggestions on restaurants. I will be entertaining potential clients so I want quality food in a place that isn't so loud we can't talk business. I will also need a few decent bars that are not too loud and not too far from the strip.

Also, anyone been on the Dam tour? Is it worth the drive and time? Anyone been hiking in Red Rock Canyon? Is it worth it?

Fire away, who knows how this could turn out.

Eateries and bars on/near the strip?

You better land some pretty lucrative deals, just to recoup what you'll spend on dinner.

I wish I was the one picking the town, but for some reason the conference is there anyway.

Hope you like hoards of illegals slapping business cards for whores in your face for miles on end.

I remember being in Vegas last a few years back for a conference/expense account abuse with one of my vendors and some co-workers. It was one of my fellow register jockeys first trip to Vegas and he couldn't believe it. He pointed out some lonely loser grabbing the cards as quickly as the undocumented can flick them. He asked me "is he really going to call all those girls?" to which I replied " I have a feeling the card will do just fine for him"

Good food that I can get anywhere else for cheaper though.

The slapping of the business-cards-for-hookers is pretty annoying. Then again, there's a ton of annoying shit going on in that town.

Ah, good old lost wages. I'll tell you one thing. If I ever go there again I will be certain to find the pinball hall of fame and spend a good part of a day playing my old time favorite machines.

I lived there from 1994 - 1999 and haven't been back since I left. I'm sure it's changed, at least on the outside, pretty much since then.

Red Rock is (was?) a great place to hike but I wouldn't plan on walking too far if your're there between about May and October.

In the summer you can go hiking on Mt. Charleston, a ski area about 45 minutes out of town. At 7700 feet the temperature is pretty manageable even in the summer, and great views of the valley below.
The peak is about 12,000 feet and there are some great trails.

Thanks for the info all. The longer dam tour is the one Imwas considering. The ski area sounds like a much better hiking location.

Was also thinking about rolling past the American Restoration shop for the tour they have. Some of the things they restore are amazing.

Restaurant suggestions are still lacking.

If you are flying into the fbo it's on the strip side of the airport so you will be across the street from the MGM. 2 min shuttle to the Cosmo.
Can't swing a dead cat in that area of strip without hitting a great resturant. Just stay out of planet Hollywood cause it's more of a party casino.

In my very limited experience, most casinos have decent grub (for a price).

New York, New York has restaurants up the yingyang. Pretty much everywhere you turn at the Venetian, too. Then again, the singing dudes in the Venetian are pretty annoying after about the first 15 seconds.

If you have been to the Grand Canyon and have not been awed, inspired, humbled, and amazed, then you must not have a pulse.

Flown over it, never been in.

While it's kinda cool, it's not that spectacular to me, since many similar sights are just a couple hours east of me.

Went to the Grand Canyon when the kids were about 3 and 5 years old. Walked up to the edge, looked over, got back in the car and drove home.

Check out the restaurants at Mandalay Bay hotel. They have about 10 restaurants and it's on the quieter end of the strip. Prices vary from $ to $$$$. It's my favorite hotel in Vegas. Spa, pool and restaurants are the best.

Take them downtown. You can dine old school at Hugo's Cellar in the 4 Queens and then take them to a strip joint afterward.

The Italian restaurant in Caesar's Palace has been very good for a very long time. Ate there 15 and 20 years ago.

Funny, that was almost my exact thought as I headed south on I15 for the final time after five years there, with my pickup loaded and our two cats in the back seat, and Joni Mitchell singing "California, I'm coming home" on the stereo.

I was there for 3 days, how in Hades did you last 5 years? To be fair, in talking to some of the locals, they told me that once you get away from the "strip" it's pretty much like any other town. I wouldn't know as I never got far from the casino's 'cept for the drive in and the drive out, both ways in a hurry.

I was there for the first time a few weeks ago for a work trip. I didn't get to see as much as I wanted, drank far more than I knew possible and had one pretty memorable night at a night club called Beacher's Madhouse at MGM. If you want to watch a show with a bunch of Moving Sale's black and Asian cousins, go there and laugh your ass off at the midget shows.

It's funny when I see threads like this because the reason for it being posted is not to ask for advice but really to tell everyone you're going to Vegas without showing off.

LS, you're a well traveled person and probably have a good little social network of yours with a lot of connected people or at least know someone who knows someone who can answer all of your questions. Hell, you most likely have the entire trip planned out on your Trip Advisor app on your Samsung Galaxy S5 (water resistant model of course).

Dude, just come clean and tell us you're staying in the Cosmopolitan in Vegas and are eating at A, B, C, and D restaurants.

Btw, there is a really good and quiet sushi bar next to the 2nd floor theater at Planet Hollywood.

Swing and a miss.

I often reach out to posters here for suggestions via PM if I know they are familiar with a certain area. Prolly done that upwards of 20 times.

In this case I had no idea who might be a Vegas fan so I asked the Board. I am surprised by the number here who aren't Vegas fans.

But then again you already knew all this and that's why you offered up a suggestion. Thanks for that.

I worked for a regional turf equipment company that had a short line of products they needed to train some brain dead sales persons on. The product was owned and manufactured in the UK, and the limey dude decided Vegas was a good spot ( cheap) to have said training session. I cautioned him that might not be a good idea, since these salespersons were coming for a training session only, and not a show or other function where some level of decent behavior was usually required or boss like presence was around. He said no, it is a great spot.

The first morning I rolled out to the shuttle to the golf course, at least 30% of these dudes were still at the tables, drunk off their asses. Never made minute one of training. The second morning, a full 50% more of them were no shows, including the limeys own reps, who were conducting the training were MIA. I did one training session for the ones left for about an hour , and then put forth that we should go play golf on this resort course and get drunk, especially since the limey was paying for it.

Oversaw some golf course construction projects there about 12 years ago, but worked 12 to 14 hours a day and was on a plane for PDX every Thursday about 3 pm. Never went to the strip or any of those hand job Mexican whore houses that are all over. Went to ConEx there a few years ago, and really hate the town. Only want to go back for a bucket list NASCAR race.

Unlike you and the other worshipers of NASCAR, I could dig a race at Vegas. Not the best track in the sport, but good enough for me. I have been to Charolette back in 97 and did a meet and greet there that got me in a Petty car for a few laps around the track. I can only imagine what 100,000 people and 50 cars in that place sounds like.AZ is out since I hate bull rings.

Better than Vegas than not at all.
