Buffalo trip

Post by trev »

I got our tickets. Traveling to Nashville to take mom to her family reunion in B-lo. I have 2 days to see the sights, in addition. I'm going to see the falls. Is there anything else I need to do there? I haven't been there since I was a kid and probably won't go back again, ever.

Are you sure you want to get within a one day drive of Schlomarty?

Are you into car trunks and rope?

If you plan on crossing into Canada, you better have passports or enhanced driver's licenses if your state provides them.

That's 1.5 more days than you need.

Blow off the reunion and hang out in Nashville.

I'm staying in Nashville for 10 days. So much fun to do there. My mom can't travel alone, so I'm doing my dad a favor and taking her to her reunion. I'm a good daughter.

I asked you when you are coming up. Also, are you doing everything with your mom? I'll look some stuff up today. Although if I had two days in Buffalo, I would spend them in Toronto.

Sorry, didn't see that.

I'm going Aug. 1. - 5. My mom will be visiting with her family and she's not able to be very active. I'm going to sneak out and see some sights, like the falls. I'll be by myself so I plan on staying in the good old USA and not crossing the border. Do I need to? We are staying near the galleria. I guess it's a big mall. I just want to see something outdoorsy or historical.

Thanks!

The Galleria is a large enclosed mall. Haven't been there in years so not sure how well it is doing these days. You can see the falls from the US side, but the best views are on the other side of the river. Also all the really touristy stuff there too. On the US side, there is a casino in Niagara Falls if that's something you like. Also some outlet shops off Niagara Falls Blvd. Buffalo itself has a decent zoo and museum of natural history in/near Delaware Park. Google is your best friend.

I have to agree with Wolfman. The best views of the falls are from the Canuk side. When your on that side of the river Asia few of the locals why the fascination with Tom Horton's. That reaction can be amusing.

If it were me, I would do Goat Island and the Canadian observation area. They have a status of Tesla on Goat Island and a view of the river that even Canada doesn't have. But the view on the Canadian side is pretty freaking sweet. If you have the proper ID, I would do it. Customs on the Rainbow Bridge has never been a hassle for me. They have parking right at the observation area because it is Canada so getting in and out is easy, even if there is some traffic.

Directions:

From the Galleria area it is 90 to 290 to 190 across Grand Island and then you get on the Robert Moses Parkway into Niagara Falls.

For the trip back to Buffalo, I recommend the Niagara Parkway. It is RIGHT next to the river and takes you back to the Peace Bridge with no detours. Hop on the 190 back to 90 and you're back in the Galleria area in no time.

You could also check out the tours at Buffalo History Tours. They are walking tours and mostly outdoors.

http://buffalohistorytours.com/

There is also Old Fort Niagara State Historic Site.

http://nysparks.com/historic-sites/31/details.aspx

And for dinner? May try Sinatra's.

http://sinatraswny.com/menu

You could check out one of the largest marble penises outside of Washington at the McKinley Memorial. It is right in front of city hall at Niagara Circle.

And, since Buffalo loves to remind people that a President was once clipped within its city limits, the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site might be a spot to stop at.

http://www.trsite.org/

Of course their is the Knox Albright Gallery, you could see Heart at Artpark, and there is a Buffalo Zoo. But being from San Diego, going to the Buffalo Zoo would make you cry. So don't do it.

Wow, what a slip on that one. I was meaning to type out ask, but maybe the locals part threw me off.

How about this fix, ask an Asian local about the fascination with Tom Horton's.

For one, Tim Horton was a real guy who played on the last Toronto Maple Leafs Stanley Cup winner. In Lower Canada that means something. Other than that I don't know. Their donuts are OK, but the coffee is filtered through some vile unearthly substance. My father drinks that crap. But he's 72 and his taste buds have just given up. He also drinks Michelob Ultra.

I don't drink coffee at all so I can't comment on the taste of the coffee. But because of that I have no need to ever step foot in one.

The locals though will wait in line for 15 minutes without blinking an eye. Reminds me of my time in New England, 25 cars in the drive thru line of Dunkin D, while there were zero people in line inside the store.

Used to be a Canada thing. This one is in Prescott Ontario. Someone told me you can actually get lunch there. Expansion brought them across the border. Have no idea how far.

I do have a passport, but being by myself, I doubt I'll go over the border.

I want to do the Cave tour where you get to walk to the foot of the falls

Cave tour? The one we did is at the bottom of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side. At night they light up the falls with colored lights.

If you want real wings come to Country Sweet in Rochester. If you want brutally overcooked wings with suicide sauce, there's a million places in Buffalo that will do it for you.

Edit: I am horribly remiss for not including Sal's Birdland, home of the Boss Sauce.

I won't be issuing any wings. I see no reason in the world to eat wings.

What is with B-lo and all the smoking hotels? Rare to find a non-smoking one.
Do the restaurants allow smoking too?

That's because you've never had any worth eating. I bet the places out in California even serve them with ranch dressing. Freaking barbarians.

No smoking by state law in any bar or restaurants. There are some non smoking chains out there. You can find out which ones here.

http://www.no-smoke.org/learnmore.php?id=185

Also, even hotels that allow smoking now separate the smoking rooms by floor. So it isn't like you have to smell the smoke comming out of their doors as you walk to your room.

Out here we have Wing Stop, where they deem KFC's gelatinous discards suitable and people dunk them in honey mustard sauce like a fucking McNugget.

Here's a hotel for you. 100% non smoking at right at the airport. It is about 5-10 minutes from the Galleria.
