I agree with SS, that there is no one greatest rock band. It has to do more with what you as individuals like. I like a broad spectrum of music, and in particular groups that can get beyond the 3 or 4 chord shit the Stones play and some of the other horrific shit mentioned.

Vocals that can mix in some harmonies, not the screeching bad voice of Mick. Bands that can mix in some keys, some horns, a mandolin (REM), dobro ( Doobies, Fleetwood Mac), unusual instrumentation, ( Geddy Lee bass), expert guitar work, ( Steve Gaines, Allman Bros, Eric Clapton).

For groups, I give my vote to the Doobie Bros who have managed 40 years with the core group and produce some excellent music. Great vocal stacks, and a creative song writing that is beyond compare. Good guys too. I have had several meet and greets with them and a couple of chance encounters with them before the shows, with Pat and Tom on the beach at Lincoln City a couple years ago and at the Oregon Gardens. They truly love what they are doing, having fun making music and making huge jack in the process.

if I never heard the Stones or LZ or PF again that would not bother me as long as my library still has the Doobies, EC, Tom Petty, Skynyrd, Allman Bros among many others. I can also enjoy other styles as well since this morning found Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam on the computer.

After Fagen and Becker pretty much gave him the axe, Skunk joined the Doobies. I think he was with them a little long then the Dan, actually.

Eventually, he got away from touring/professional musician (not altogether), and became a consultant to the DoD in missile defense systems (I think he held some sort of civilian position with them at some point). Not sure if he still does that, or if he retired from the war machine.

Interesting career Skunk had.

As for the stones and their Neanderthal 3 chord playing, yeah, it is fairly simple, but so what. Those fuckers had a run of near 20 years where pretty much everything they put out became a pop rock anthem. This is back before pop rock sucked. No one has equaled that in terms of popularity/longevity. LZ might have matched it had JB not gotten himself dead.
