I owned a Gen 1 Prius waaaaay back in the day when everybody was suspicious of those newfangled hybrids (even though they had been vetted thoroughly in Japan for the previous 8 years). They had been on the market for about three weeks when my wife and I purchased the vehicle. I got the mandated manufactured price (no mark-up), the federal tax credit, the California state rebate, the San Joaquin tax rebate, forever free oil changes, a free three year bumper-to-bumper warranty and single occupant HOV driving privileges. All told, I paid approximately $9000 less than what it cost Toyota to make the car. Four years later I sold the car to a SF Chronicle reporter for nearly what I had paid for the Prius new due to outrageous gas prices. My only complain is that the seats were hard due to weight savings and that there was no cruise control on the originals.

I once topped off my tank at Bear Valley and rode it down to Modesto and made somewhere in the 150 MPG range. I also was a hyper-miler before it became a "thing" to do. Stupidly, I'd tailgate semis to get in their draft and would regularly get upwards of 70 MPG. It was exhausting driving though being that close to the bumper of a truck and not being able to see what was coming down the road. Like I said, stupid.
