SP 2 and Symantec

Post by jiminphilly »

I have symantec gold (corporate edition) virus software on my home pc and I have not installed sp 2 because I thought I read sp 2 fucks around with symantec. Any truth to this or should I install sp2?

Service packs are interesting. Purely from a security perspective they are a waste. You can download every security patch you need seperately. The problem with them is that MS uses them to roll in new features. They tend to be features they either left out when the OS came out or they are features that they want to test for a new OS that is going to come out a year or two from now. XP SP2 is nothing great, but it does some annoying things. If you install it, you will need to know what you are doing to make your computer usable again. The firewall in my oppinion is buggy and doesn't work nearly as well as other software firewalls do. The only reason to install SP2 is because some software checks to make sure you have it. Of course if you are an average user, just install it, fix any problems that come up as best you can and just move on.
