Try the Bluebird Cafe. You might see Rayna James or Deacon Claybourne.

Lived in Nashville for 3 years. 95-98. I loved the place. Best place to see live music on the planet. Nashville is the center of the music universe and not just country. If your cholesterol level needs bumping up, find a fat mo's and have a burger. It is worth the inevitable trip to the hospital for more GI tract work.

Re: Nashville
It's a very cool town. You probably don't have time on this trip, but if you get the chance on a return trip make it out to The Hermitage (which is his estate as well as where he's buried). Very cool place.
For breakfast you'll want to try out Pancake Pantry (that's Pantry, not Panty AP). Excellent chow.

Southern history sites are hilarious. They whitewash better than Tom Sawyer.

I go to Nashville a couple times a year and leave my heart there. (My parents live there.) I love that town so so much. My favorite things to do there: Spend a day and evening downtown for music and specialty shops. Try to hit up the Hermitage Hotel bar and restaurant. It's top notch. Farm to table and the most whisky selection you will ever encounter. Love the Hermitage Mansion (Andrew Jackson's home), like Diego said. You just need a couple hours there. Another interesting plantation is Belle Meade. They also have a wine tasting at the end of tour. We also like to visit Lynchburg, where the Jack Daniels distillery is located. Last but not least you have to go to the Opry and see the show. It's always really entertaining.

Re: Nashville
Trev;
Do you know if it's a normal thing for an artist to perform outside the Opery before the show opens? I caught The Band Perry doing a mini-concert before the show when I was there. They might have been doing it because they wanted people to see more of them (they only had their first hit at that point), and it could have been that it was a special deal due to it being the first GOO Saturday show after the flood. Just curious...

I've been to the Opry show about 5 times and have never seen anyone performing outside. That's pretty cool.

Tennessee is the one state in SEC country I could live. Culture, music, sports, laid back lifestyle.
trev, let's get lost in the hills together. I can knock a few of your teeth out to really complete the experience.

got my headphones out for nothing. thought i was gonna hear some decent bluegrassy sort of thing. Got to listen to worldclass live bluegrass at Opryland most every saturday when I lived there. Even if you aren't a bluegrass fan, you'd enjoy hearing it if you have any sort of an ear for music.

You could survive in, let's say... Sedalia?
Or Hannibal, if you like river towns.
Wait... not really SEC country despite B_'s assertion to the contrary. Samuel Clemons rolled over when he read that. Missouri is like a tweener.

Wags, I was talking about how southern history sites whitewash history. You know, like when you go to Stone Mountain and they tell you that at one time the site was a quarry and they never tell you about the slave labor used to quarry that rock or that the reconstituted Klan first met on the top of the rock.

Re: Nashville
Sure. They admire the founding father's and past presidents for their accomplishments and kind of hush hush the bad stuff. It's part of history and makes the story's interesting and admirable. I have no problem with visiting these sites, knowing these humans were not perfect, but were a big part of creating the great country this is today. And, times were just different then. Thank God we have improved from that. But, their founding of our country is an asset to us now. And it's much better than most countries, you have to admit.
That said, JSC, what the heck did you end up doing in Nashville?

The Nashville parthenon is in a park. I think it is centennial park, but, I could be wrong. Don't believe that is part of the Vandy campus.Sudden Sam wrote:You check out the Parthenon replica on Vandy's campus?

Alright losers, I'm in Gashville. Any tips or suggestions would be great. Unfortunately staying out in Opryland. But I believe I can take a free shuttle downtown.
