At first glance they seem like completely different streaks with separate rulebooks, mechanics and personnel.
For the past 13 seasons the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team has earned a berth in the NCAA tournament.
For the past 13 seasons the UW football team has qualified for a bowl game.
Outside of length, the two projects differ so much that some might think it’s a stretch to put them in the same conversation.
Then you come in for a closer look.
The 13-year streak of simultaneous NCAA tournament and bowl assignments for the Badgers is the longest current run of its kind among Division I programs.
Michigan State is a distant second with eight consecutive seasons, followed by Louisville and San Diego State at five apiece.
Overall, the Badgers have been to the NCAA men’s basketball tournament every season since 1998-99, while football has earned a bowl berth every year since 2002.
UW athletic director Barry Alvarez, who rebuilt the football program out of rubble starting in 1990, said the two marquee sports at the school have followed similar blueprints to sustained success.
“They’re built with good foundations,” he said. “No shortcuts were taken. There’s a plan to be successful that fits us.”
That’s endured in football through three coaching tenures since its streak began: Alvarez to Bret Bielema to Gary Andersen.
That’s endured in men’s basketball through three coaching tenures since its streak started: Dick Bennett to Brad Soderberg to Bo Ryan.
Since 1996 the Badgers have had 18 berths in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and 18 bowl appearances. That total of 36 is more than any other major program in the nation during that span. Next is Texas with 34 and Florida with 33.
“Whether it’s Dick or Bo, they hang their hat on certain things,” Alvarez said. “Their recruitment is very similar — Wisconsin kids, Midwest kids — and their styles (are alike). They play good defense. What they believe in they’re going to teach it.
“Football is the same way. It’s the fundamentals. It’s toughness. It’s built with the type of kid that fits in this program and that’s who you go after. It’s not five stars. It’s the guys that play like five stars and buy into the program.”
The fruits of those philosophies were realized in prominent fashion this year. Kenosha tailback Melvin Gordon was the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Year in football, and center Frank Kaminsky, from Lisle, Illinois, was the Big Ten Player of the Year in men’s basketball.
That’s just the second time in the past 33 years that one school has produced those two MVPs in the same school year.
Meanwhile, Gordon was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy while Kaminsky is a finalist for the Wooden Award. Those citations go to the best college players in the nation.
Over the past 10 years UW is the only school with multiple Heisman and Wooden finalists. Forward Alando Tucker was a contender for the Wooden in 2007, while tailback Montee Ball received prime Heisman consideration in 2011.
Gordon was a high-profile recruit coming out of Bradford High School, but is an example of UW striving to keep its best prospects at home.
Kaminsky, meanwhile, is a prime illustration of UW coaches seeing potential in a backyard recruit and nurturing it to its fullest.
The two streaks at UW are wedded by consistency and a high degree of difficulty.
“It’s hard and our stick isn’t as big as some other people in our league,” Alvarez said. “They’ve got built-in recruiting advantages because of location and population. But we don’t make any excuses. We find a way to compete with those schools.
“It’s hard to do. It’s hard to win. There are lots of people that would like to swap places with us.”
It doesn’t take much to chop the legs out from underneath a program. It could be one misguided coaching hire (see Michigan football). It could be one NCAA rules scandal (see Ohio State football). It could be one criminal element (see Penn State football). It could be one ethically challenged athletic department (see Syracuse men’s basketball).
“There are a lot of things that can disrupt the program,” Alvarez said. “That’s why it’s hard to sustain. You have to be diligent and you have to know what you want. That’s what our coaches have done.”

Give us a call when they get some jewelry.
It is a pretty good run, though. Wish UConn had that sort of consistency. They're like the fukking red sox when it comes to hoops. Win a title, go to the NIT the next year.
And lets not even talk about football.

Not everyone on this board has an IQ as low as yours.
Though, it is in the majority.
Maybe, you could respond to every post with a GIF again... and see if you can raise it up a bit.

It's disturbing... but, do you have another interpretation of rural Georgia you'd like to share, spuge?
Actually, I think you're the only one on this board that lives with more blacks then Porky.
How's that working out for you and your anger issues ?

I'm not very familiar with BFE Georgia because I've never had to give two fucks about the place, so I don't have any other frame of reference. The State wrote: It's disturbing... but, do you have another interpretation of rural Georgia you'd like to share, spuge?

What's your take on the google-gentrification of the Mission, see the new shit happening on Day Street? Guess you got pushed out (and your shit in) a long time ago. And the Peninsula, it seems that between Redwood City and San Bruno is 100% messican row now. When did that happen, it used to be real nice. Let's try to make this a positive conversation.
Have a nice day.
How's suburban Salt Lake... sister-fucker ?

Did your great-grandfather... eat the kids right away after he killed them... or just left them out to dry for later ?

These are serious questions, and I hope to get a serious response.

Ya think ?
Hating yourself/themselves has become a genetic flaw in your clan of midwestern misfits from Illinois...
You need to step outside your own head... to actually see what the fuck is going on.
Straight up from Steiner and Fulton/ and clips of "Lands end" ... sup, Seacliff (Robin Williams) had a crib there.
You know... Alamo Square (Steiner and Fulton) and the "Painted Ladies" in the Western Addition aka the "Full House" backdrop.

Even my boy... can't get any respect... when people can't get out of their own heads.
(CNN)What happens when John Stamos shows up outside the "Full House" home that made him a star?
Nothing, apparently.
For reasons unknown to us, Stamos was recently lurking outside the popular San Francisco attraction when a group of tourists showed up.
It appears they were too busy gawking at the house to realize "Uncle Jesse" was standing next to them. It appears that Stamos was amused and posted an Instagram of him standing next to them.
The caption? "Boy, these youngsters have 0.0 idea what they're missing. #Fullhousehouse. #TURNAROUND."

The point being... step outside of your own head... and you may see things you never thought were there or valid in your closed mind.

No doubt... you need more than 3,000 square feet... Porky.
Not to mention you couldn't afford a brick on the staircase to the crib.
2,500 square foot... crib... in the most expensive city (San Francisco) in the United States and it's not even close.

You'd end up doing life in jail...
Of course... those of us that get out and meet and deal with the public... don't have your fear of human beings.
Quite frankly, you're a mess.
