Decent one liner by the columnist, but it is simplistic and misses the mark. A white college kid who says that gets kicked out of college. A black college kid gets excused in a couple hours. Does it make a difference in any of our lives? No. But it does foster and perpetuate issues where free speech is restricted on college campuses. See the growth of safe spaces on college campuses around the country. These safe spaces have been used to eliminate debate and therefore do a disservice to those they claim to help.

The other problem with the columnist's take is that attitude drives a bigger wedge between the races. There are the minority views of those like Schmick, but there are a lot more who might agree to some degree but won't speak out for fear of being labeled a bigot or racist, but will turn out to vote in large numbers. When this happens nothing changes because there isn't a discussion or exchange of views/understandings.
