Well consider the source for the ranking. Madison does rate in many top 10 - 100 lists to be sure, but it all depends on which list you look at. In some, Madison isn't even mentioned. Ultimately, I'll take the Southwest or the Pacific North any day.

Well, the idea that he bragged about owning a snow-blower pretty much sums it up.
I see the article mentions their "great" biking. Wonder how many people bike to work in January? Because the city their so deperately trying to be is #1 (by faaaaarrrrrrrr) in the country every month of the year.
But I'm sure that somewhere in their, they tout their breweries and tittybars, too.
They may well rank #1 in creepiness and apery.

2. You'd be shocked at how many people bike to work here in January. On these:

3. Nowhere in their/there/they're...did I see any mention of breweries or titty bars. BTW, I used to have a job that involved travel and I've been in strip clubs all over. Two of the very best were in Wisconsin, as well as unquestionably the very worst.
4. Your obvious jealousy is duly noted.

I played golf this last January. Close to home. Weather was pretty decent. Often in January, it rains... a lot. And I don't have a piece of gas-powered equipment to clear it (although some people have gas-powered pumps to get it out of the crawlspace).Goober McTuber wrote:Your obvious jealousy is duly noted.

Bad take, period. The Pacific is warmer, you can scuba/snorkel without a dry suit, surf, and best of all doesn't stink (most of the time).

Yes, children can be afraid of the ocean, but I'm much more apprehensive of my afternoon commute than I am of anything in the ocean, forest, or desert. Animals are logical, people usually are not, especially in urban America during rush hour. Salt water is not too bad, especially with a cold one on the beach, whether ocean or lake, a post shower is required.

What's with the constant need to pimp your city/state as the best place to live?
At the end of the day, they're all shitholes. Some just happen to be nicer shitholes, but they are still shitholes.
If you were really proud of your shithole, you wouldn't want to publicize it so more people could add their shit to it.
KCMO is a gigantic shithole, especially the part north of the river. Stay the fuck away from here.

Good point, however most people that talk up their shitholes would rather live in them than in your particular shitole of KCMO. So it's a relative point on your behalf.War Wagon wrote:What's with the constant need to pimp your city/state as the best place to live?

Have you every been in the Pacific, north of LA?Joe in PB wrote:Bad take, period. The Pacific is warmer, you can scuba/snorkel without a dry suit, surf, and best of all doesn't stink (most of the time).
The great lakes may be colder for half of the year, but, they do get warm enough to swim in for a few months. Water temps from cencal on North require a wetsuit year around. It is a beautiful coastline, but, unless you are a sea lion, it is too fucking cold to swim in. I'll bet even speedo wearing, liquored up french canadian dude on vacation in Maine (pretty much the only guy in the water at Old Orchard Beach in July), wouldn't go in. I walked into the water, somewhere in Oregon, in the middle of the summer. Got about mid-shin deep before I went into shock and decided I better get out. That was 5-6 years ago and I am just regaining feeling in my left big toe.

The last time I spent time in the ocean was in Grand Cayman. And that is because it was so hot on the sand, you had to be in the water. Then a storm came thru and everyone was hunkered down under a roof because it was pouring down rain. No thanks. I'm with Mgo, I'd rather explore or be by a nice clean pool with good old chlorine to sanitize me. I think I've talked about my trips to the Caribbean and how I would be content never to go back.
As a kid and teen, though, you couldn't get me out of the water. Any water. In Malibu, I would walk way down the beach and swim back. In San Diego, I would body surf for hours.

Not sure where all you have been in the Caribbean. I've been to a number of the islands and swimming in the ocean beats the pool hands down. Except for Aruba, where the beach shared the same harbor with the cruise ship docks. You could smell the diesel fuel in the water.
St. Maarten is a small island that has 37 different beaches. Some of them can get a bit rough in February, but you can always go to another side of the island and find decent swimming. We go every year and will probably continue until the day I die.
I only go in the pool when I need to pee.

For the record, I've been to Grand Cayman, Bahama's, and Jamaica.
I think I could spend some time in Loreto, Mexico. Was there for a day and could retire to a place like that. Very laid back place.

It's been a long time but we had some good times in the Virgin Islands, both British and American. Buck Island Reef National Monument was pretty awesome but I hear there was a lot of hurricane damage to the coral sometime recently.

Went to Jamaica a few times 12-15 years ago, always to Ocho Rios. I misspoke earlier. Ocho was the beach that stunk of diesel. Had a good time, but wouldn't go back. Too much crime and poverty.trev wrote:I'm calling BS, goobs! You pee in the ocean, I just know it. ;)
I have only been to the western Caribbean. I know I need to visit the eastern part to maybe change my mind about it.
Been to Curacao once, mostly stayed at the resort. Decent food, nothing exceptional except for the night we ate at their sushi place. It was nice, but probably won't go back.
Been to Antigua once, mostly stayed at the resort which had its own private beach. Food was decent, especially a little place above the beach called Mary's Shack. She grilled chicken and burgers during the day and had a wash tub full of beer on ice.
Been to Aruba 3 times, food was exceptional for a buffet, and included a little floor show some nights. Also had a small Italian restaurant which you were allowed to eat in once a week, as well as a steak place. Started going off the resort in Aruba, found some very good restaurants.
All of the above destinations were all-inclusive, and for the most part Apple vacations. Which makes you inclined to stay on the resort property. Other than Ocho Rios, the beaches have all been very nice. There was a beach bar near our hotel in Aruba that featured live music in the evenings, usually for free. Aruba was always fun, but the most expensive of any of our vacations.
About 5 years ago we tried St. Maarten. Beautiful place, tons of very good restaurants, numerous beautiful beaches. You can get from one end of the island to the other inside of 30 minutes, even in rush hour. Better accommodations than we had at any other island.
We've talked about going to the Virgin Islands, but after visiting St. Maarten 5 times in 6 years, I just can't imagine going anywhere else. I'm thinking that when we retire, we can start taking more than one Caribbean vacation a year.
Went to Mexico once. Never again.
