Gambling in golf ?
This seems strange to me especially when juxtaposed with the Pete Rose and baseball situation.
Is there any "standard" in pro golf regarding gambling? Is Lefty in trouble?

These guys routinely win and lose large sums to each other in practice rounds. Of course some of them play for big stakes off the course.

I wonder if he got paid inIn 2001, Mickelson was reprimanded by the PGA Tour after winning $500 from Mike Weir in the players' lounge at the NEC Invitational, wagering $20 at 25-1 odds that Jim Furyk would hole a bunker shot.

I'd have to take you off "ignore" first.Papa Willie wrote:I've always thought Phil was a good guy (like everybody else). Don't know if y'all remember "Remote Kontrol", but he told a story where he ended up playing a game with Phil and some other people one day (I guess at a course around Phoenix). He said Phil was a Grade A prick. Don't know if RK was trolling or not, but he seemed pretty sincere.
I just thought I'd put that out there, because I knew Goobs would care.
Oh, wait........

Have heard a few stories that Lefty is a grade A prick, smiles nicely for the camera though.

Do not know why everyone finds this so surprising. Just another revenue stream..You think these guys can just make it on winnings,(if any), show fees, endorsements, Boards of Directors, owning or designing golf courses. ??BSmack wrote:These guys routinely win and lose large sums to each other in practice rounds. Mickelson lives in Rancho Santa Fe, not one of you poorer parts of town. I once saw him driving on El Camino in Carlsbad in his Aston Martin.
A couple of years ago he said he was thinking of moving to Florida because he didn't like paying California's taxes. Many people around here enthusiastically endorsed that idea. I'm pretty sure he's still in RSF.

Re: Gambling in golf ?
how could he be? betting on yourself is not against the law, and golfers can't "throw" a tournament because it's an individual sport.....the only way he could make money illegally was if he accepted a prospect wager that he wouldn't win a tournament, then threw in a triple bogey at the 18th to dump the tournament....the only problem there is that such prospect bets don't exist (it would be foolish for a casino to take wagers on who wasn't going to win a tournament).....second, typical payout for winning a tournament is in excess of a million bucks.....there is no way that anybody could make an equivalent amount gambling on a tournament.....if he's going through bookies, there may be some problems, but betting down in Vegas is nobodys business except his own....Wolfman wrote: Is there any "standard" in pro golf regarding gambling? that's a prospect bet but why Weir would give those kind of odds is simply staggering.....pro golfers are constantly holing chips, approach shots, and sand shots.....now if Furyk had made a bet with Weir, there still isn't a problem, because it's not like he's betting against himself, he's betting on himself....as far as the PGA goes, they can go fuck themselves....they get testy if you use a different trading company than the one their honking at a particular golf tournament.......
get out, get out while there's still time
