This happens more than you think. An American 787 was pretty torn up 10 days ago leaving China in a hail storm.
As to how or why, I dunno. The ATC recordings will tell us a lot. Did ATC deny requests to deviate around the storms? Did the pilots think they could get over the top of it? Was this a line of weather hundreds of miles long and they tried to pick a "hole" that wasn't as red on their weather display?
Time will tell.
