Old Men's Concert Plans
Now's the time of year when a lot of acts start announcing their spring and summer tour schedules. Around here you have to be ready to jump on shows that you want to see or you may end up missing them or paying out the ying-yang from a ticket broker. With that in mind there are certain artists and venues that I check on a regular basis for updates. I was looking at Herbie Hancock's schedule on Wednesday and found that he's playing at the Hollywood Bowl in August. Sounded interesting so I went to the HB website and found that he'll be performing with a band called Mega Nova, which turns out to be Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Marcus Miller, Carlos Santana and Cindy Blackman Santana (drummer, Carlos's wife). Damn, that sounded like a pretty decent band. Anybody who knows jazz knows of all these guys. Individual tickets don't go on sale until May 1 but I found that it's part of a package called "Jazz at the Bowl 1." You can buy the entire package now and get preferred seats.
Here's the lineup for "Jazz at the Bowl 1:"
Wednesday July 20 - Yes We Can: An Allen Toussaint Salute
Dr. John & The Nite Trippers
The Allen Toussaint Band
Galactic
Additional artists to be announced
Wednesday August 10 - 50 Years of Jeff Beck • Buddy Guy
Jeff Beck
Beth Hart, special guest
Buddy Guy
Wednesday August 24 - Mega Nova
Herbie Hancock
Wayne Shorter
Cindy Blackman Santana
Marcus Miller
Carlos Santana
Wednesday September 7 - Carlos Vives
Carlos Vives
The HB is an overnight commitment for me and the OL, but I'm fucking geeked about this lineup. Plus it's a great venue, and I know a decently cheap hotel within walking distance.
I sprung for the tickets yesterday and got my good seats.
Guess I'll have to take a few Thursdays off.
Oh well.
PS...not sure if Beth Hart is the special guest or if she's bringing a special guest. If that turns out to be Joe Bonamassa, I wouldn't mind.

Re: Concert Plans
I'm gonna see Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade in his solo band called Operators in April. Then I'm going to see Wolf Parade in its reunion residence in NYC in late May. Then I'm going to see BØRNS soon after that.
Re: Concert Plans
It's a generational thing...
Re: Concert Plans
I'm taking my 4 nieces to see Carrie Underwood in April.
Rodeo starts in two weeks and Mrs. Rumps' pass gets us to all the concerts for free. We plan on seeing the following:
Chris Young
Cole Swindell
Jason Aldean
Miranda Lambert
Billy Currington
Kenny Chesney
Luke Bryan
Darius Rucker
Brad Paisley
Florida Georgia Line
Keith Urban
Also, its been a minute since we've seen Pearl Jam live, so we're thinking of taking a trip to the New Orleans Jazz Festival in April.
Hall and Oates sold out quick. I might pay a premium to go see them, but not sure if anyone wants to pay the same and roll with me for the night.

I saw Taj Mahal last hear with John Hiatt.
He's aged a lot since I bought this album, but still a great show.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band is touring this summer with Los Lobos and the North Mississippi Allstars.
They haven't announced any Left Coast performances yet but I would really like to see this show. Hopefully they'll come to the Vina Robles Amphitheater, where I saw TTB last year.

Holy shit. They're playing at the Highland Bowl? Gonna have to get busy. That venue isn't all that big. Not keen on the parking, but otherwise an outstanding venue and some great bands.

Bought a ticket for the Tedeschi Trucks show at Highland Bowl. They just started having bigger name shows at the Bowl a few years back. Looking forward to Los Lobos and Mississippi All Stars just as much as the headliners. Here's the venue. Just a stage at the bottom of a hill.

Got tickets to see Bonnie Raitt in July, in San Diego.
Last time I saw her play live was in 1984 at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach.

Looks like a cool spot. I used to go to shows at Frost Amphitheater on the Stanford campus, which looks very similar but holds about 7,000 people.BSmack wrote:Bought a ticket for the Tedeschi Trucks show at Highland Bowl. Tedeschi Trucks always puts on a great show. Looking forward to the other two bands as well. I've seen Los Lobos a couple of times, and they're one of the acts that I'll always see if I have a chance.
Last year TTB toured with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.

Re: Concert Plans
In for this Friday's show, looking forward to Rick Estrin and gang.
http://gatorbythebay.com/2016-line-up/
Also in for Tedeschi Trucks and Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers in September. I'm sure they'll be a few more in between.
Beth Hart with special guest sounds great (maybe Bonamassa or Beck), but the Hollywood Bowl is a bit too far for a Wednesday night, lol.

Re: Concert Plans
Yeah, we just make it an overnight trip. Parking is a huuuuuuge problem at the Bowl. They recommend that you park at some satellite lot and take a shuttle. Tried that once and it took an hour on the bus. There's a Best Western withing walking distance that goes for $120 or so a night so we just check in there and leave the car.Joe in PB wrote:In for this Friday's show, looking forward to Rick Estrin and gang.

We recently added Tedeschi Trucks at the Civic Theater. I actually was thinking about skipping that show but I got on the band's website for the pre-sale to see what was available. When front row center in the mezzanine (loge?) came up I had to jump on it.
Re: Concert Plans
I've been watching a lot of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on AXS TV the past week. Besides the rain-outs there have been some pretty decent performances. Nice mix of local and national talent, older and younger performers, there.
Bonnie Raitt's set was great, especially where God sat in on "Women Be Wise" with some lightning and thunder in perfect rhythm. Wish I could find a video of that.

I know most of you fucks could care less about any type of metal (Nu Metal, MetalCore, etc...)...but took in Day 2 of Carolina Rebellion...
Highlights -
Lamb of God - Fucking blistered a 40 min or so set...just wow...
Trivium - caught the last 3 songs of their set. Just a great metal band and they put out some quality stuff
ANTHRAX - tore the fucking roof off...what a great set
Parkway Drive - grinding/metalcore and they were very good
Sevendust - didn't get close enough to really get the energy...but they are very good live
Lowlights -
Megadeth - was just meh if you ask me. Musically they were tight...but the energy was lacking for sure
GHOST - what the fuck is this shit? I couldn't tolerate 30 seconds of these asshats
Five Finger Death Punch - I caught 3 songs, but had to leave...
Shinedown - have no inkling to see the Nickelback of heavy metal...thank god I wasn't forced to see them on a stage I was waiting for a band on

I'm in for Robert Cray & Beth Hart at the Belly up later this summer. Like Sam, I prefer smaller venues, and the Belly Up might be the best of the bunch in San Diego.

I saw Bonnie Raitt there a couple of times before she had any hit records. John Lee Hooker, Lighting' Hopkins and a few others I can't recall right now.
Used to go see the Mar Dels there pretty regularly back in the 80s. I guess they're still around but damn back then they kicked major ass for 50s and 50s R&B cover band. I can still hear their version of Knock on Wood.
The La Paloma used to have some good shows too. Jerry Garcia Band, NRPS, Rosie and the Screamers, Joe Bummer and the Assbites, the Mar Dels. Do they even do music there anymore?

I'm winding down a stretch of shows tonight, mostly bands from Montreal. A month ago, saw Operators (Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade). Two weeks ago, saw the criminally underrated Plants and Animals. Saw Wolf Parade on its reunion residency in NYC on Friday. Seeing BØRNS tonight. He's from West Michigan, so that's pretty awesome.

Re: Concert Plans
Checked out Mudcrutch ticket prices, $130 plus fees for general admission at Humphreys. That's more than I want to pay for a band that's more curiosity than anything else for me.
I did bite on Gary Clark Jr ($57) the night before Beth Hart, been wanting to see both.

Re: Concert Plans
Pretty pricey for sure. I'm out of town on June 30 anyway. Humphrey's has some good shows every summer (and I've seen some really good ones there) but I've been sort of trying to avoid them lately, due to a few bad experiences and their tight fucking seating. I'm a fairly large person, though not as fat as Goobs would like to believe. If I sit next to another 200 pounder, especially if they're executing a manspread, I have to lean over on my wife to avoid becoming intimate with them.
Examples of bad experiences:
Some drunk asshole stumbling out at the end of a show, leaning on the front of my car and puking on the right front tire.
12th row center seats for Tedeschi Trucks - really good seats - and a fat obnoxious couple sits three rows directly in front of us, and stands up and "dances" for the whole show. I could see the keyboard player and one of the horns. People were shouting at them to sit down. I got to the point where I was throwing spent lime wedges from empty drinks at them but they didn't sit for the entire show. Some of the folks directly in front of us moved off to the standing room at the side so they could see the band. People were asking the ushers to do something but they wouldn't.

Not a fan of the tight seating either, but Mudcrutch, Gary Clark Jr, & Govt Mule are all general admission, standing room only. Prefer the Belly Up.
