Cal's looking like the true national champs they are right now.

Either that or the entire Big 12 is steaming pile of baby puke.

Geez. How many brains does it take to get into Kal?

Michigan doesn't belong in the top 5. They looked bad in the first quarter. If Liufau doesn't get hurt, I think the Buffs could've stayed in that game. The Wolverines need Jourdan Lewis back pronto.

Gun to my head top 5...

1. Alabama
2. Louisville
3. Ohio State
4. Clemson
5. Houston

I'd probably go Stanford 6th and then Michigan is 7th at best.

PS: Your thoughts on Stanford/Washington next week? Guess we'll find out where the Huskies are...
Actually next is week vs. UCLAme at the Rose Bowl, where Stanford seems to feel pretty comfortable lately.

Last night was another solid, if unspectacular, win. You'd think that a 17 point win over USC, with McCaffrey going for 165 rushing and 260 yards total offense, would be something to be impressed with but it's sort of what you've come to expect. It's true SC did a lot to beat themselves, but you have to give Stanford some credit for that too. SC's 8 penalties for 65 yards seemed like about twice that much, given the timing. Also, they were running the ball so effectively, especially in the first quarter, you wonder why they didn't continue that. I'll have to say, I'm sometimes frustrated with Shaw's/Bloomgren's lack of flair in play calling, but patience does seem to pay off here.

Not too worried at this point about UCLA, though I guess they have to beat Stanford SOMETIME. Washington has looked like the strongest competition in the PAC 12 up to this point but their three big wins have come over three teams which probably wouldn't beat either of the teams Stanford has played so far. Looks like Stanford will be Washington's first real test (they play Arizona next week), so we'll have to wait and see.

If Stanford can keep coming up with solid but unspectacular wins over the next four weeks, which includes UCLA, Washington and Notre Dame (and Wazzu), they'll definitely be in the conversation. Especially considering how they usually seem to get better as the season goes on, and how the rest of CFB is shaking out. Damn if I don't love CFB. You just never know what can happen.

Man - what in the FUCK is it with dumb bastards dropping balls before they get over the line over the last few years? It seems as if it's happening more & more, too.

It'll be interesting to see if this win will bring Milton back in. Kal might actually be worth a shit if they just get some defense.
Well, they held Texas to 43 and SDSU to 45.

Pumphrey went for another 220 yesterday against NIU, BTW. That's 599 in the first three games. Sure the Aztecs don't play a Power 5 schedule, but they've won 13 straight going back to last year. They should at least crack the top 25 one of these days. I'm tempted to post a top 10 and include them at #10 just for shits and giggles.

Slot Houston wherever you like, as long as it's never in the top 4. Hopefully Louisville will take care of business November 17 so we don't have to hear any nonsense about Houston being in the final 4.

On the one hand, if Houston thrashes Louisville, it means they beat the tough teams on their schedule... all two of them.

On the other hand, 2 decent games does not a schedule make.

I hate to be a Power 5 homer, but seriously... look at any P5 team's schedule, and even those who scheduled cupcakes will still play a lot more tough games than Houston. It's the "Group Of 5 Dilemma."

If Houston beats Louisville, the narrative will shift to, "Oh, I guess Louisville was overrated." It's this really annoying thing we do now in college football. If Team A beats Team B, it was only cuz Team B sucked. Well, no. Sometimes two good teams play each other, and by design, there has to be a winner and a loser.

Stop worrying so much about the damn schedules and WATCH the games. Houston is really good. This isn't your typical non-power 5 trying to gimmick its way to victories by beating people 45-42. They do this thing that the vast majority of college football teams are incapable of doing today: play defense. Their run defense in particular is as good or better than anyone's. They also have arguably the best up and coming coach in the game, whose departure from OSU I think was the biggest reason the Bucks didn't get back to the playoff last year. Their offense just wasn't the same without Tom Herman.

And as soon as they get into a power 5 conference where at least one team on their conference schedule is rated, then they should be considered. No way you get to the final 4 playing a grand total of 2 top 25 teams. Two and a half months apart.

I agree with both MGO and Goobs, if that's possible.

Again, the Group Of 5 Dilemma.

What if USF is top 25 at the CCG?

USF has one ranked team on their schedule (OOC of course). Not a huge resume builder. Sorry.

Again - I was quickly losing faith in them on the Cincy game last week - until they opened their can of "fuck kick" in the 4th quarter. Jesus - that was just insane.

Something tells me that they'll be up and out of the roof for the Louisville game, and I hope they beat the shit out of Quitrino & Co..
And they'll still be outside of the top 4 if poptart is right.

So it's not about beating top 25 teams to strengthen your resume. It's really about top 25 teams from a P5. Amiright?

Even the best teams in the country make mistakes on the road. Houston dominated that game in every facet. What kept it close was the turnover margin was 3-0 in favor of Cincy with 10 minutes to go in the 4th. When they matched the turnover margin in three straight possessions, the final score reflected how the two teams matched up against each other.

Houston's run defense is giving up 38 yards on the ground per contest. That is ridiculous. And before y'all shit on the competition sans Oklahoma, Lamar's feature back rushed for 2000+ last season and Cincy was averaging 200+ on the ground going into last week's game. The front seven is a top five unit.

It's about playing a decent schedule. Week to week. Not weak to weak. Being in a power 5 schedule generally means that you're playing good teams as often as not, rather than once every other month.

Then shit in the other hand, and see which one is heavier.

Is it just me, or is all of FBS a complete mess? We've got Bama and... who?

The SEC is a one team conference. The B1G is starting to shake out, but who knows how the "cannibalization" will end up. The B12 is top-heavy with mediocrity. The ACC has Clemson and Louisville (who I'm not sold on yet). The PAC is... who the heck knows what's going on in the PAC (we'll know a lot more in 2 weeks).

So far, there isn't one team that looks like world-beaters. Surely someone has to impress me soon, right?
