13 year olds chanting "BUILD THAT WALL" in a suburban Detroit middle school. This is where we have fallen.

13 year olds are pretty fucking clueless. When I was 13, this is what was I concerned about: Watching R rated movies (probably Skinimax), playing baseball and football with my friends, playing Sega Genesis and worrying about if I was going to get pizza with my school lunch. One thing that was the furthest from my mind: Immigration politics.

It's one thing for adults to be chanting this but it is completely another for 13 year olds to be chanting this AT SCHOOL. But then again, kids mimic what they see on TV and for the last 18 months they've watched our president elect and his racist supporters demonize others for the color of their skin.

Wait, so I should draw these conclusions from a six second video? You mean to tell me they just started chanting this without provocation? Is that what I'm supposed to deduce from that six second video? Am I supposed to do the same when I saw the video of a man getting beaten to a pulp for voting for Donald Trump? No, I (being a reasonable and sound human-being) waited for all the facts to come out. The man in the video who was beaten was in a car accident and when he got out and asked if the other driver had insurance, they jumped him. It never had anything to do with Donald Trump.

And it would have been really really cool if we had been bilingual. Because that's all of us could have walked out of school with the capability to get a job anywhere in the Western Hemisphere other than maybe Haiti. When the fuck did it become a bad thing to learn another language? Or for that matter to watch immigrants pledge loyalty to our country in their mother tongue?

Had I played football, I likely would have sucked just as you would have sucked at futbol. I suspect that had Ronaldo grew up in your town, he might have played football and likely would have been an all state wide receiver. Athletic ability knows no language or sport, other that body type, as Ronaldo would never have been good as a left tackle.

I agree that being bilingual would be cool. It certainly makes anyone more marketable in many places, but it should not be imposed on anyone. You should become bilingual because you chose to, not because you were forced to.

As for what tongue immigrants pledge their allegiance in, when it comes time to do so as a naturalized citizen, they had best be able to stumble through it in English.

Police officer under investigation after flying Confederate flag at Trump protest rally

TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City police chief says the department will launch an internal investigation after a longtime officer was seen revving the engine of his pickup truck and flying a Confederate flag, as he drove past a black family participating in a rally at a city park.
Marshall Collins Jr. and his relatives were at Friday's gathering where people were protesting Donald Trump's election when he said the truck's driver came by once, then sped back past where his family was standing.

"As he came back by, I kind of stood out and I held up my fist very quietly. For me, that's a sign of solidarity and black pride. So that's what I did," said Collins, a father of two and an instructional services health coordinator for the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District.

He said the officer made a show of grabbing a beer and joining a small pro-Trump group in a parking area. That's when Collins said he decided to address the issue.

Collins said he asked the truck's driver - whom he did not know was an off-duty police officer - why he would bring the Confederate flag to a community gathering. "I said, 'Do you know what this represents? Do you understand the hatred?'"

"He said, 'You don't know the history of it ...That flag didn't do anything to you.'"

I had foreign language requirements in both HS and college. Not exactly a new Millennial Snowflakey thing. Probably fewer public schools requiring it these days mostly due to budget cuts.

But then I guess it should be optional. So should Math, English, History, PE, etc. I mean look how far suckaholic has come without learning any of those.

I don't have a problem with a HS requiring one to study a foreign language. I do have a problem with them saying you must learn espanol, because you will need it to function in your area, because the place is being over-run by various spanish speakers.

I did grow up in a very bilingual environment and trust me, I wish I had taken advantage of it by learning more spanish than the obligatory swear words. With just the slightest bit of effort on my part, I could have been fluent in spanish...well, not spanish exactly, more like whatever it is that PRs speak, which according to actual spanish speaking folks I know, is sort of kind based on spanish....barely.

Mikey, a rudimentary amount of math should be mandatory. But not really much past arithmetic. Basic geometry/algebra maybe. English certainly should be. AMERICAN history should be. Beyond that, students should be able to diversify their learning as best possible.

A real liberal would agree.
