Is the a commercial airline speed limit?

On the LAS/EWR flight we had about a 170 mph jet stream push and for a bit, we had a ground speed of about 730 mph. Pretty sure that is supersonic. And I would think a 757 traveling above the Midwest at supersonic speeds would be frowned upon. Or are sonic booms only an issue when you are supersonic air speed?

Simple answer? Ground speed is not air speed, hence the relative movement of a jet stream assisted aircraft is only relevant to the passengers inside it and to the ATCs and ground personnel who need to fit an early arriving plane into the queue for a spot at the receiving airport.

Thanks Rooster. I sort of suspected that relative speed wasn't relevant and it is just a matter of airspeed.

Yeah, spray, 760 is hauling ass. Almost like a ghetto Concorde. And yeah, its gotta suck for the dude driving the 767 from London to JFK thinking, if this fukking jetstream gets any worse, I'm gonna run out of gas. I would think that in cases like this, they would drop it down to an altitude where the headwinds didn't kick their ass as bad.

One more question for lefty.

What is your personal best for ground speed while driving? I will assume you've been north of 700. I have fairly regularly seen better than 700, as it seems as though pilots are always quick to point it out to their passengers. What is the highest jetstream speed you've seen? Does it ever get much past 200?

I decide to take a trip thru the Panama Canal and go radio silent for a few days and that is when you decide to discuss flying.

I will answer more in depth when I get home but I see Rooster posted and he knows the drill.

True airspeed, indicated airspeed are the main points of focus. Ground speed doesn't have much use for us. More later.

I was wondering why you hadn't chimed in.

I decided to google it and ended up on some forum for frequent air travelers/pilots and some reported ground speeds well over 800. It seems that most were on flights from Asia to North America.

One would think that near the equator, going east-to-west, a plane could hit a ground speed a fuckton higher than that.
